Trent Alexander-Arnold was among five players cut from the England squad ahead of Monday's 3-3 draw with Germany in the Nations League.

Competition rules stated that the Three Lions had to trim their squad from 28 players to 23 for the match, and Alexander-Arnold - who's made just one international appearance in 2022 - was among those sacrificed. The Liverpool right-back was an unused substitute for Friday's 1-0 defeat to Italy.

AC Milan's Fikayo Tomori, West Ham United's Jarrod Bowen, and Southampton's James Ward-Prowse also missed out, while Manchester City's Jack Grealish was a known absentee due to suspension.

The exclusion of Alexander-Arnold, 23, casts doubt on his involvement at the World Cup in Qatar. England manager Gareth Southgate left him out of an England squad in March 2021, saying, "I don't think he's played at the level he's been at during the last few years."

The rivals for Alexander-Arnold's position who remain in the current squad are Reece James, Kyle Walker, and Kieran Trippier. John Stones also appeared at right-back in some recent Manchester City matches.

Alexander-Arnold and Trippier lead the Premier League in key passes by a full-back or wing-back with 13 each.

England's World Cup campaign kicks off against Iran on Nov. 21. The Three Lions round off their Group B commitments with games against the United States and Wales.
