Juventus ordered to close Curva Sud for 2 games, fined €50,000 after violence at Torino
Serie A's disciplinary tribunal is cracking down following the violence that marred Sunday's Turin derby between Torino F.C. and Juventus.
A paper bomb that was launched into a section containing Torino supporters left nine people injured, and the tribunal determined on Thursday that Juventus fans, who were initially blamed, were indeed responsible for the incident.
As a result, Juventus have been ordered to close the Curva Sud - the section of Juventus Stadium where hardcore supporters stand - for their next two matches and have been assigned a €50,000 fine.
Torino have also been fined €50,000 for failing to prevent the paper bomb from being carried into the Stadio Olimpico di Torino.
Juventus immediately responded to the ruling, issuing a club statement in which they drew attention to the "enormous contradictions" that were made and announced their intention to lodge an appeal against the decision.
The perpetrators remain unknown and the location of the crime – which is known – receives no sanction, while Juventus Stadium is sanctioned and with it its owner, Juventus, which according to all the authorities has made its stadium a safe environment both in terms of prevention and, more importantly, repression, if and when it should be required.
Juventus Football Club will therefore lodge an appeal against this decision, while continuing to cooperate fully with all state and sports authorities to identify the perpetrators of an intolerable, reproachful act, which must be punished to the full extent of the criminal and sports laws.
