Milan, Dec 18, 2021 (AFP) - Monza's match at Benevento became on Saturday the first in Italy's top two divisions to be postponed due to Covid-19 infections this season after five players at the Serie B club tested positive for the virus.

The Italian second tier said in a statement that Sunday's encounter would be played on a date to be confirmed after Monza's entire squad was ordered by local health authorities in Lombardy to isolate at home until Tuesday.

Italy's top-tier Serie A has been unaffected by postponements due to virus cases so far this campaign, unlike in England's Premier League which is only staging four of 10 scheduled matches this weekend.

Benevento and Monza are both challenging for promotion to Serie A this season, with each team in the play-off zone and locked on 31 points.

Monza are owned by former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, who bought the club in September 2018 with the club in the third tier, having sold AC Milan in April 2017.
