PALM HARBOR, Fla. (AP) — Taylor Moore was never really the star attraction Sunday at the Valspar Championship until he had finished hitting all the right shots and posed with the trophy for his first PGA Tour title that sends him to the Masters.

Adam Schenk and Jordan Spieth provided enough compelling theater for so much of the day, locked in a battle on the back nine of the Copperhead course at Innisbrook.

When it was over, all they shared was misfortune.

Moore surged into the mix with a 9-iron to 5 feet for birdie on the 15th hole and a 25-foot birdie putt on the 16th hole, followed by two tough pars for a 4-under 67.

That turned out to be a winner when Spieth hit his tee shot into the water on the 16th and Schenk, going for his first PGA Tour victory, hit a drive on the final hole that settled next to a large pine tree. He made bogey and finished one shot behind.

Moore, who grew up outside Oklahoma City, was on the practice range anticipating a playoff when he realized he had won at 10-under 274.

“I might have been under the radar to some people watching, but I felt like I was in the golf tournament from the time I teed off today and was just excited to control what I could control and get it done,” Moore said.

The victory sends him to the Masters in three weeks, a welcome addition to his schedule.

Spieth was tied for the lead when he sent his tee shot into the water on the 16th and managed to stay in the game by getting up-and-down from 163 yards to salvage bogey. On the par-3 17th, which yielded only two birdies all day, Spieth hit 4-iron to 6 feet — only to miss the birdie putt.

Tommy Fleetwood was part of a three-way tie early on the back nine until he took bogey on the par-5 14th. Spieth didn't realize anyone else was in the mix.

“I thought it was me and Adam. I thought it was down to us two,” Spieth said. “I was thinking it was Tommy one back of us with a few holes to go and so I thought we could still kind of control it from the last group. Then I saw 10 (under) was posted walking off 16 green.”

The real heartbreak belonged to Schenk, whose wife flew down to Florida for the final round a month before she is due with their first child. Schenk holed a 70-foot birdie putt on the 12th hole. He made tough par saves on the 16th and 17th holes to stay tied.

On the 18th, however, he pulled his tee shot to the left. It was roughly the same line as Moore had hit his tee shot earlier, only Schenk's ball rolled through the gallery and stopped next to a pine tree.

“Wish I could have lightly hit somebody and stayed where I had a chance to get to the green, but it did not, and I didn’t deserve it,” Schenk said.

His only shot was hitting an inverted gap wedge left-handed, and it was a dandy, shooting across the fairway into the rough. His third shot came up just short of a ridge and rolled onto the fringe 40 feet away. The par putt to force a playoff hit the hole, but had too much pace and hopped out.

Schenk, playing for the 10th consecutive week so he can take time off when his son is born, closed with a 70.

“It stinks to get so close," he said.

Spieth missed a par putt on the 18th that was worth FedEx Cup points and money, signed for a 70 and tied for third with Fleetwood.

No one was paying all that much attention to Moore until the 29-year-old who played at Arkansas started hitting one quality shot after another. He stuffed his approach to 2 feet on No. 12 for a birdie. He effectively won the tournament with a great swing with a 9-iron on the 15th and his big putt on the next hole.

Moore got up-and-down for par with a long bunker shot on the 17th, and he two-putted from about 70 feet just off the green at the 18th.

The victory for Moore was worth $1,458,000 and moved him to No. 9 in the FedEx Cup standings. Along with the Masters, he gets in the PGA Championship. He moved from No. 103 to just inside the top 50 in the world.

Maybe you've heard - Tiger Woods is back ... again. We're just as excited as you are.

Maybe you've also heard that Netflix's much-anticipated docuseries, "Full Swing," is out Wednesday. The PGA hopes that, at the very least, those previously only mildly interested in this tournament will be amped up for golf on the first weekend post-NFL.

Meanwhile, the players will get their second straight crack at $20 million at the Genesis Invitational. Of course, our goals on a weekly basis involve more modest dollar figures. That's especially the case after a half-step back in Phoenix last week, where only Justin Thomas came through for a top-20 result as Hideki Matsuyama's ball-striking fell apart in the final round.

Three draws (odds to win/top 20)

Three golfers more valuable than their odds suggest this week.

Cameron Young (+4000 / +145)

Cameron Young has so far played a different schedule than his first full season on the TOUR. He earned an appearance fee to play an Asian Tour event in Saudi Arabia two weeks ago - finishing second - after his outstanding results last year. However, Young struggled on the greens at TPC Scottsdale just days later thanks to the tough turnaround.

Last season, he went from T26 in Phoenix to a runner-up at the Genesis Invitational, edging the likes of Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, and Viktor Hovland in strokes gained: tee to green. A little bit off the radar, Young has a better probability than +145 suggests to finish in the top 20.

Adam Scott (+5000 / +200)

Speaking of out of sight, out of mind, Adam Scott played in both Hawaii events to start 2023 before taking the next three weeks off due to a revamped travel plan.

Scott is serious about this season. He's also won twice at Riviera, including his victory in 2020, and he finished fourth here last year despite a modest ball-striking week. With a perfect swing, Scott can be relied upon tee to green, so his comfort on the Pacific Palisade greens makes him dangerous.

Taylor Moore (+15000 / +475)

Given the sheer volume of golfers, why make life more difficult when you can pinpoint a handful of players on the come-up? We should've backed Taylor Moore for a top-20 result last week after doing so at Pebble Beach. Instead, we missed out on his third straight top-20 finish.

Those results came in three different tournament setups (Torrey Pines, Pebble Beach, and TPC Scottsdale), and Moore shot all four rounds under par in last year's Genesis Invitational, making +475 for a top-20 finish very tantalizing.

The scary fade

Here, we pick a golfer with high expectations who's worth betting to miss the cut at a big price.

Nick Taylor (+160 to miss cut)

It's a compliment to Nick Taylor that he's included in this section, but Taylor's journeyman-like career suggests you shouldn't fear fading him. A nice week at Pebble Beach was followed by a close call for the biggest win of his career in Scottsdale. However, he now heads to a place where he hasn't had much success, so you wouldn't blame him if he wasn't locked in on a tough course where bogeys can pile up in bunches.

The favorite club in the bag

Going into this betting season, we picked two golfers to bet to win each week - Max Homa and Tom Kim. The thinking is that our second-tier duo on the oddsboard will win more than once and be profitable on the assumption they play 20-to-25 events. It took one week for that to pay dividends, as Homa won at Torrey Pines at 20-1.

Are Max and Tom playing this week?

Yeah, they are! Homa had arguably his biggest win at the Genesis in 2020 and is 22-1 this week. Kim is at 40-1 after having one of the highlights of the Phoenix Open when he was mic'd-up for a birdie in the third round.

Golf betting is its own type of grind. The nature of betting outright is such that you can lose over and over, but one win makes it all go away - whether that's over the course of a few weeks or in one tournament.

Such was the case last week at the Farmers Insurance Open, where we were mid-disappointment in Justin Thomas finishing a stroke outside the top 20 and in Taylor Montgomery's 75-75 weekend. Then Max Homa swooped in to win at 20-1, turning a losing week into a hot start.

Now the PGA TOUR heads up the coast to the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, where Tom Hoge came from relative obscurity last year to edge Jordan Spieth and where the TOUR players aren't necessarily the biggest stars on the course. A trio of big names makes up the favorites, as Spieth, Matthew Fitzpatrick, and Viktor Hovland are the pros that the gallery will gravitate to but who we'll have to ignore if we're looking for valuable golfers to contend.

Three draws (odds to win/top 20)

Three golfers more valuable than their odds suggest this week.

Nick Taylor (+6600 / +300)

There's a lot going on at this event, with the X-factor of the pros playing with amateurs - famous or otherwise - and very long rounds. So we'll lean on a player who has a history of being unfazed by it all. Taylor won this event in 2019, has made the cut in six of seven tournaments since his rookie year, and shot over par just once since his first lap around Pebble's trio of tracks. Taylor's form is fine, with three top-20s since the start of the wraparound season and just one round over par in the 2022-23 season.

Taylor Moore (+6600 / +300)

Moore played his first full season on TOUR last year and had early success with a T16 at Pebble Beach. After struggling in the middle of the season, he closed with a pair of top-20s and added another in October. Though he missed the cut in Palm Springs, he shot under par in all three rounds of a tournament where you needed to go very low. In far more difficult coastal conditions at Torrey Pines last week, Moore was one of eight players to not have a round over par on his way to finishing T11. In a weaker field and at a place he's had success before, Moore should make the cut and have a chance at another top-20 - a good bet at 3-to-1 odds.

Brendon Todd (+8000 / +350)

After the three stars mentioned above, oddsmakers slot in the next handful of players on the oddsboard based on their historical success at the course, but some fall through the cracks. Todd has been hot and cold when coming to Pebble, but we play on polar results in golf betting. At last year's tournament, Todd was ninth in strokes gained: tee-to-green but lost strokes on the Pebble Beach greens. Given that putting is Todd's strength - he's gained plus-0.53 strokes per round in the last 18 months - if he can get a putt to drop, he can improve on a T16 and comfortably cash a +350 payout.

The scary fade

When you least expect it, you mega-slice a tee shot into the trees. We pick a golfer with high expectations who's worth betting to miss the cut at a big price.

Robby Shelton (+150 to miss cut)

It speaks to the shallowness of the field that Shelton is expected to make the cut in a tournament he's never played in. He finished last week at Torrey Pines with rounds of 74, 75, and 76. So between struggles last weekend and dealing with unfamiliar circumstances this week, we'll take plus money that Shelton doesn't make it to Sunday.

The favorite club in the bag

Going into this betting season, we're picking two golfers to bet to win each week - Max Homa and Tom Kim. The thinking is that our second-tier duo on the oddsboard will win more than once and be profitable on the assumption they play 20-to-25 events.

Did Max or Tom win yet?

Actually, yes! Homa (20-1) won last week at Torrey Pines for a big score in our first try with this gambit. Both Homa and Kim are off this week - Kim for the second week in a row.
