PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Chad Ramey’s first two trips to PGA National as a professional were largely forgettable. He might have a chance to change that this week.

Ramey shot a bogey-free round of 7-under 64 on Thursday in the opening round of the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches, tying S.H. Kim for the 18-hole lead. Kim had an eagle and five birdies, including one on the finishing hole, to pull into the tie atop the leaderboard.

A group of five players — Cameron Young, Ryan Moore, Chesson Hadley, Austin Eckroat and Andrew Novak — all played in the morning wave and finished one stroke back with 6-under rounds of 65. Also at 65: David Skinns, who played in the afternoon and missed a 11-foot birdie putt on his final hole that would have given him a share of the lead.

Ramey’s past appearances in the event — then known as the Honda Classic — were quick and unremarkable. He missed the cut at PGA National by 10 shots in 2022, missed it by just one stroke last year and failed to shoot a round in the 60s either time. But conditions were perfect when he teed off early Thursday; a course known to often have whipping winds had barely a breeze for much of his round.

“I got a good break this morning with there not being any wind,” Ramey said. “I fully expect the rest of the week the wind to blow. I’ve never been here and it not blow. But to take advantage of the calm conditions is definitely a plus.”

Added Rory McIlroy, the world’s No. 2-ranked player who shot a 4-under 67 in the morning wave: “You’re not going to get this course much easier.”

Ramey made a 27-foot birdie putt on the opening hole, starting a stretch where he had five birdies in his opening seven holes — including on the 479-yard, par-4 sixth, one of PGA National’s tougher holes. From there, he mostly just stayed out of trouble; only two of his 11 par putts were from outside of 4 feet.

“Hit it well, putted well, chipped in once,” said Ramey, whose last first-round lead came last year at The Players Championship. “Very solid through the whole bag.”

Kim — a South Korean who shot a 58 on the Japan Golf Tour in 2021 — holed out from 25 yards on the par-5 third to highlight his round. He holds a first-round lead for the first time in his 45 PGA Tour starts.

Hadley was also bogey-free, with six birdies on his card as he finished one shot back of Ramey. Moore holed out from 113 yards for eagle at the par-4 13th, highlighting his 65. Eckroat had five consecutive birdies in one stretch; he and Moore had nine birdies and three bogeys on the day.

Hadley said the combination of minimal wind and receptive greens left him thinking “let’s go.”

“I was able to take advantage of the conditions today and shoot 6 under. It probably will continue to go a little bit lower, but it’ll show its teeth. It always does,” Hadley said. “Typically if you’re just hanging around on Sunday, you can put together something, and it can be a special weekend.”

Billy Horschel, C.T. Pan, Sam Ryder, Bud Cauley, Erik van Rooyen, Kevin Yu and Chandler Phillips were in a group at 5-under 66. McIlroy, defending champion Chris Kirk and FedExCup points leader Matthieu Pavon were among those who finished with 67s on a day where PGA National was far from its toughest.

“This felt pretty tame, to be honest,” said Daniel Berger, who finished with a 3-under 68. “I’ve played here where 2-under par is tied for fourth place. Obviously, the golf course has changed a little. It’s a little easier right now. But I expect as the week goes on to get a little tougher as the greens get firmer.”

Play was suspended for darkness with two groups unable to finish their final hole. They will complete their opening rounds early Friday.

Consider Chad Ramey's first trip around TPC Sawgrass a massive success.

The 30-year-old looked like a seasoned veteran at the challenging layout Thursday as he fired an 8-under 64 to lead Collin Morikawa by one stroke at The Players Championship.

Ramey went bogey-free around the diabolical Pete Dye design, highlighting his round with an electric birdie at the island green on the par-3 17th. That put him in the solo lead, one ahead of Morikawa.

Despite the impressive performance, Ramey was quick to shoot down any talk about TPC Sawgrass playing below its usual level.

"Not easy at all. I might have made it look that way, but it wasn't easy at all," Ramey said, according to ASAP Sports. "It was fun, first time to shoot a score on such an iconic course like this. You can't ask for any more."

Play was suspended due to darkness at 6:28 p.m. local time and will resume Friday morning at 7:40 a.m. Justin Suh is the only player high on the leaderboard still yet to finish; the talented 25-year-old has a 28-footer for eagle on No. 16 that can vault him into a tie for second.

The early conditions Thursday were very favorable, as the morning wave took dead aim at TPC Sawgrass. Eleven of the top 18 players on the leaderboard finished their rounds before the afternoon, including Ramey, Morikawa and Taylor Pendrith.

The blockbuster trio of Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, and Rory McIlroy headlined the early action, with the top three players in the world heading out before 8 a.m. Scheffler looked solid throughout his round to lead the way at 4-under, while Rahm overcame putting woes to get in under par with a 71.

McIlroy struggled from the jump, double-bogeying his first hole en route to a 4-over 76. This marks the 2019 Players champion's worst opening round on the PGA TOUR since the 2021 Masters.

After hitting just 6-of-14 fairways, McIlroy highlighted the thick rough as one of the main reasons he struggled to score well on Thursday.

"I feel like this is as penal as I've seen it out of the rough for a long time," the four-time major champion said, according to ASAP Sports. "I think you'd have to go back to when the tournament was played in May, when we were in Bermuda rough, for it to be as penal as that. Yeah, you don't hit it on the fairway here, you're going to struggle."

Jordan Spieth led the afternoon featured group over Justin Thomas and Max Homa. The three-time major winner fired a 3-under 69 to sit in a tie for 12th, while Homa shot even par for the day.

Thomas, the 2021 champion, finished at 1-over 73, his first over-par score at TPC Sawgrass since the opening round in 2018.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Sam Burns won the Sanderson Farms Championship last week and is trying to put it behind him. He's playing as though it never ended.

Burns made a pair of 6-foot par putts on the only two greens he missed in regulation, ran off eight birdies in the morning for an 8-under 63 that left him a shot behind Sungjae Im and Chad Ramey on Friday in the Shriners Children's Open.

Not only has Burns won twice in the last six months, but he also lost in a playoff at a World Golf Championship and finished one shot out of a playoff at Riviera this year. The 25-year-old is comfortable at the top, and it's showing.

Key to this week was not to let last week linger.

“What we tried to do is just last week is last week,” he said. "This week is Shriners and preparing for this week, trying to make sure Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday that we are giving ourselves the best opportunity to play well this week.

“Obviously, incredibly honored that I won last week and such a fun time, but just trying to kind of leave that there.”

Im and Ramey each closed their afternoon rounds with birdies on the par-5 ninth, with Ramey making a 13-footer after hitting his approach into the right greenside bunker.

They were at 14-under 128 at the TPC Summerlin, each opening 63-65 on a course that was doused with rain.

Im won the Honda Classic last year for his first PGA Tour title.

“There’s two days left to play, so I like to try to keep focused on my game and try to take it one shot at a time,” the 23-year-old South Korean player said. “It’s going to be difficult if it’s windy. I have to be more strategic to the course management.”

Ramey is making his third start of the year and fifth in his PGA Tour career. The 29-year-old former Mississippi State player earned his tour card this year through the Korn Kerry Tour.

“The first tournament of the year I didn’t drive it very good and didn’t putt it very good,” Ramsey said. “So, the last few weeks I’ve kind of been hitting those points pretty hard, and I’ve kind of feel like I got it back under myself a little better right now. I hit it really well off the tee and I’m making putts. You can’t ask for much more.”

Adam Schenk had a 65 to match Burns at 13 under. Aaron Wise was another stroke back after a 62.

Matthew Wolff (67), who lost in a playoff last year, was 11 under with Honda Classic winner Matt Jones (67), Adam Hadwin (64), Andrew Putnam (64), Slovakian silver medalist Rory Sabbatini (66), Harry Hall (65), and Talor Gooch (67).

Sung Kang followed an opening 61 with a 73 to fall six shots back at 8 under. Four-time major champion Brooks Koepka shot a 67 to get to 7 under.

While Burns remained hot, that wasn't the case with some others who contended last week at the Country Club of Jackson. Cameron Young, a runner-up last week, and 54-hole leader Sahith Theegala missed cut by a stroke, each shooting 70-68.

They had company. Rickie Fowler managed a 66 but also fell a stroke short of the weekend as he tries to find his game. Scottie Scheffler, unbeaten in three matches in his Ryder Cup debut two weeks ago, also dropped out.

Burns played well in the opening round, too, except for the par-3 17th when he slightly pulled his tee shot into the water and made double bogey. There were no such issues in the second round. He was efficient as ever and remained dialed in with his irons.

Only two of his eight birdies were outside about 6 feet. He two-putted his final hole, the par-5 ninth, from 35 feet.
