Decades from now, golf fans will be following entirely different players. There's no one to have blind allegiances to, nor should there be. The personalities are what drive interest in the game - but that doesn't apply to just human personalities. Every spring we await the familiar sights of TPC Sawgrass and Augusta National, among others.

So when a tournament like the Canadian Open goes away for three years, its return is extra special, with a new host venue in St. George's Golf and Country Club - considered a top course in the country. Many of the game's best players arrive in Toronto excited to play a course that should provide a challenging tune-up for next week's U.S. Open.

Those respecting the history of a national championship will have to navigate a new course and a setup that should demand respect. We've already laid out who to back and fade on the oddsboard, so let's take a peek at the specific markets to peruse at the Canadian Open.

Head-to-head matchups

Justin Thomas (-110) over Scottie Scheffler

Fading Scheffler is frightening, but I like Thomas for another good week - as a veteran with all the shots - on a new course for the vast majority of this field. He'll have regard for the nature of a national Open and won't just treat it as a tune-up.

Shane Lowry (-115) over Corey Conners

Conners has home-country advantage, but the self-imposed pressure has been proven too much for previous contending Canucks. Lowry's in better form and his consistency over four rounds gives him the edge in this matchup.

Adam Hadwin (-110) over Sebastian Munoz

It's hard to tell whether this is going to be a birdie-fest the way Glen Abbey's Canadian Opens have been, but if it's not, Munoz is less likely to have a great showing. Hadwin has a 59 on his resume, and he made a name for himself way back in 2010 - the last time the event was held at St. George's - when he shot 68-66 to make the cut as a Canadian TOUR pro.

Brandt Snedeker (-115) over Luke Donald

A cheeky matchup between a pair of contenders in 2010's tournament who are now veteran exemptions. Let's back an ambassador of the event's title sponsor, Snedeker, who's coming off of two straight made cuts.

Cameron Champ (+110) over Aaron Rai

Champ has the power to go low on a course that should suit big drivers of the golf ball, and if that low round happens on Thursday, that would mean bonus cash from our last derivative market bet.

Top 20

The odds in the top-20 market are based on the probability in the outright winner market, but those might not correlate for many players. Some are just more likely to play well enough for a good week without rising to the top. Here are my favorite bets - long and short - to quietly have a nice week.

PLAYER	TOP-20 ODDS
Shane Lowry	+105
Adam Hadwin	+160
Chris Kirk	+190
Cameron Champ	+275
Martin Laird	+425

First-round leader

The Canadian Open was once seen as somewhere an obscure TOUR player could grab a win, but with Rory McIlroy, Jason Day, and a former world No. 1 with a newly boosted bank account all putting their stamps on this event recently, that's no longer the case. There's still room for an 18-hole leader from deep down the board, though. Here's a group that's capable of starting hot and how you might split a unit across a portfolio of players:

PLAYER	ODDS	UNIT
Scottie Scheffler	+2000	.3
Harold Varner III	+4500	.2
Adam Hadwin	+5500	.2
Cameron Champ	+6600	.1
Martin Laird	+9000	.05
Danny Lee	+12500	.05
Hayden Buckley	+12500	.05
David Lingmerth	+17000	.05

I'll take Scheffler at 20-1 to do anything. Obviously, the possibility of a chop with a tied first-round lead and his perceived advantage throughout four rounds are why his odds are longer in this market than for the whole tournament.

Danny Lee won't sustain for four rounds but can pop with a 65 at random times. On Monday, Buckley and Lingmerth dueled in a U.S. Open Sectional Qualifier, so if they can keep up their good play, maybe they can parlay that into a big first round.

Martin Laird edged out Austin Cook and Matthew Wolff in a three-way playoff to claim the 2020 Shriners Open.

It marks the fourth career PGA Tour victory for the 37-year-old Scotsman, and his second time winning this event. His first win on Tour came at the Shriners in 2009. It's also his first triumph since 2013.

Laird carded a 3-under 68 on Sunday - his worst round of the week - but he made a clutch birdie on the second playoff hole to take the tournament.

Rolling it in Vegas for the win. 🏆

The veteran entered the week as the 358th-ranked golfer in the world, and he got into the tournament as a sponsor's exemption.

After tearing the meniscus in his left knee in June, Laird was making just his fourth start since the PGA Tour's restart, according to Golf Channel's Ryan Lavner.

Here's the final leaderboard:

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Patrick Cantlay picked up enough birdies on the back nine to catch up to Martin Laird, and they each had a 6-under 65 to share the lead going into the final round of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

It was another day of low scoring for just about everyone but U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau. He had a pair of double bogeys through six holes and went from one shot behind to at barely inside the top 40.

DeChambeau was 5 over through a five-hole stretch on the front nine. On the TPC Summerlin, that feels much more over par. “About 12,” he said.

He rallied for an even-par 71, but that left him seven shots behind with 30 players ahead of him.

That starts with a pair of past champions.

Laird, the 37-year-old Scot who learned to play the ball in the air while at Colorado State, won in Las Vegas in 2009 for the first of his three PGA Tour victories. He also lost in a playoff the following year won by Jonathan Byrd with a hole-in-one.

Cantlay’s success is more pronounced and more recent. He also won his first PGA Tour title at this event in 2017, and followed with runner-up finishes to DeChambeau and Kevin Na each of the last two years.

Cantlay and Laird were at 20-under 193, though this should be far from a two-man race.

Matthew Wolff got it started early. After making the cut with one shot to spare, Wolff had three eagles in a five-hole stretch and had to settle for pars on his final two holes for a 61.

Making three eagles at Summerlin is not unusual with a few short par 4s and all the par 5s easily reachable. Wolff, however, holed out on No. 11 from 116 yards. He drove the green on the 301-yard 15th hole to 15 feet and holed an 18-foot eagle putt on the par-5 13th.

He never really considered 59 because he was only 2 under on the front. He played the back in 8-under 28.

“If you only shoot 2 under on the front you feel like you never have a chance to shoot 59,” he said.

Wolff posted his 18-under 195 right as the last group was starting the third round, and it held until Laird was the first to get to 19 under with a birdie on the 13th.

Wyndham Clark (65), Brian Harman (67) and Austin Cool (67) also were at 195.

Na had a 64 and was three shots behind along with Will Zalatoris, who has a chance to earn special temporary membership with a strong finish Sunday. He already is leading the Korn Ferry Tour points list.

Laird holed a 50-foot eagle putt on No. 9 as the made the turn. Otherwise, his round did not appear to be anything special. That goes for Cantlay, too, as he birdied the first and ninth hole and made pars in between.

They were going nowhere, yet both have been around this course enough to go they had plenty of chances ahead of them, with a pair of par 5s and a reachable par 4.

Cantlay picked up birdies on all three of them, along with a bonus on the 10th. He pulled his tee shot so far to the left that he hit a provisional in case it was out of play. He found it, he could play it, and with no trees in his way from about 100 yards, he hit wedge to 4 feet for birdie that started his back nine on a strong note.

DeChambeau, playing for the last time before the Masters on Nov. 12-15, did too much damage early on to recover. A wild tee shot on No. 2 led to double bogey, and while he missed the fairway badly on No. 6, what led to the double bogey was a three-putt from 12 feet.

Four straight birdies on No. 8 steadied him — he nearly drove the 419-yard 10th — but not enough. He failed to convert on the short par-4 15th and dropped another shot coming in.

“Didn’t really hit bad shots, just didn’t go where I wanted to,” DeChambeau said. “Went into some really bad places and unfortunately didn’t save par from them. Just stuff didn’t go my way today, and it’s OK. Not a big deal.”
