AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — It has been six long years since Angel Cabrera walked the verdant green fairways of the Masters.

Two were spent in a gray Argentine prison cell.

Once feted with a parade through the streets of Cordoba for his U.S. Open triumph in 2007, and celebrated again for his victory at Augusta National two years later, Cabrera found himself staring down prosecutors in July 2021. The man known as “El Pato," or “The Duck,” for his waddling gait had been accused of making threats against one of his former partners.

Cabrera ultimately was sentenced to prison, and a year later, pleaded guilty when another ex-girlfriend came forward with similar claims. The court made the two sentences concurrent, but the result was still three years and 10 months behind bars.

He was released on parole in August 2023 and cleared to return to the PGA Tour Champions later that year.

Now, after winning the Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational on Sunday, the 55-year-old Cabrera is back at the Masters, where chairman Fred Ridley affirmed that his lifetime status as a former champion remained intact.

“Life has given me another opportunity. I got to take advantage of that," Cabrera told a small group of reporters who gathered beneath the stately oak that serves as a popular meeting point near the Augusta National clubhouse following his practice round on Tuesday. "I want to do the right things in this second opportunity.”

Over roughly 15 minutes, Cabrera was honest and contrite. He had made mistakes and he owned them.

“There was a stage in my life of five years — four, five years — that they weren't the right things I should have done,” Cabrera said, speaking in Spanish. “Before that, I was OK. So I just have to keep doing what I know I can do right.”

That includes striking a golf ball.

After he was paroled, and before Cabrera could secure his visa to travel outside of Argentina, his longtime coach, Charlie Epps, brought him a set of clubs to begin practicing again. There was a bit of rust, but the swing didn't feel a whole lot different than it had a couple of years earlier, when Cabrera made the cut in the Senior Players Championship.

“I started to practice a lot, getting in form," Cabrera said. “I don't know if exactly my game's back technically.”

It was good enough to win Sunday. Cabrera was tied with K.J. Choi in a PGA Tour Champions event that he only got into at the last minute when Mark Hensby withdrew, until a birdie on the 17th hole. Cabrera safely found the 18th green, two-putted from 18 feet for par, and he was able to celebrate a victory that seemed a decade in the making.

Or perhaps longer during those long nights in prison.

“Obviously I regret things that happened and you learn from them,” Cabrera said, “but at the same time, those are in the past and we have to look forward to what’s coming.”

That included the Champions Dinner on Tuesday night, when Cabrera was able to once again join a collection of past winners to celebrate and reminisce. Scottie Scheffler, as the reigning champion, chose the menu, and Cabrera was looking forward to having a chance to catch up with old friends like Gary Player, who has become one of his biggest supporters.

“I can’t wait to see him,” said Adam Scott, who beat Cabrera in a playoff to win the 2013 Masters. “It’s a happy thing for me. We’ve got a fairly long history. I first met him on the European Tour before we both were on the PGA Tour. We have played in Presidents Cups, we’ve been partners. I’m thrilled he’s going to be back joining us this year."

Cabrera understands if there are some who feel differently. Not everybody is predisposed to forgive and forget.

“Everybody has their own opinion," he said, “and I respect that.”

But Cabrera is also steadfast in his belief that he belongs at Augusta National again.

“I won the Masters,” he said. “Why not?”

PANAMA CITY (AP) — Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley said former Masters champion Angel Cabrera, on parole in Argentina for gender violence against his partners, is welcome to compete in April provided he can get a visa to travel.

Cabrera, a two-time major champion, won the 2009 Masters in a playoff over Kenny Perry and Chad Campbell. Masters champions have a lifetime exemption into the major.

Cabrera was imprisoned for two years for threats and harassment of his partner, a case that was joined by another former partner. He was released on parole in August and has been playing in Argentina.

“Angel certainly is one of our great champions,” Ridley said Thursday at the Latin America Amateur Championship. “As we all know, he has been unable to participate in the Masters the last couple of years due to legal issues.”

Ridley said officials have been in touch with Cabrera's manager and that Cabrera currently cannot enter the United States.

The PGA Tour notified Cabrera his suspension has been lifted, though he would be required to comply with terms of his prison release. The 54-year-old Argentine would be eligible for PGA Tour Champions events, as long as he could get to them.

“He presently is not able to enter the United States. He doesn’t have a visa, and I know that that process is being worked through,” Ridley said. “We certainly wish him the best of luck with that, and we’ll definitely welcome him back if he’s able to straighten out those legal issues.”

In a lengthy interview with Golf Digest published in the December-January edition, Cabrera said he was embarrassed by his behavior and asked his former partners for forgiveness.

“They had the bad luck of being with me when I was at my worst. I wasn’t the devil, but I did bad things,” Cabrera said. "I am deeply embarrassed because I disappointed the people closest to me — and everyone who loves me through golf.

"Golf gave me everything, and I know I will never be able to repay the debt I owe this sport.”

Cabrera won his first major in the 2007 U.S. Open at Oakmont by one shot over Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk. He also lost in a playoff at the Masters to Adam Scott in 2013.

He hasn't played in the Masters since missing the cut in 2019.

Two-time major champion Angel Cabrera, released on parole from an Argentina prison in August for gender violence, has been cleared to play in PGA Tour-sanctioned events. He said in a Golf Digest interview he wants to clean up his image from “serious mistakes.”

Without confirming Cabrera was ever suspended — the PGA Tour does not publicize conduct violations — a tour spokesman confirmed the 54-year-old Argentine is eligible to play.

Cabrera, who won the U.S. Open at Oakmont in 2007 and the Masters in a playoff in 2009, was imprisoned for two years for threats and harassment of Cecilia Torres Mana, his partner of two years. Her case was joined by that of another former partner, Micaela Escudero.

In a lengthy interview with Golf Digest published in the December-January edition, Cabrera said he was embarrassed by his behavior and said, “I made serious mistakes.”

“I refused to listen to anyone and did what I wanted, how I wanted and when I wanted,” Cabrera said. “That was wrong. I ask Micaela for forgiveness. I ask Celia for forgiveness. They had the bad luck of being with me when I was at my worst. I wasn’t the devil, but I did bad things.

“I am deeply embarrassed because I disappointed the people closest to me — and everyone who loves me through golf,” he said. “Golf gave me everything, and I know I will never be able to repay the debt I owe this sport.”

Golf Digest said Cabrera was undergoing treatment for alcohol addiction, including taking daily medication that causes sickness if he drinks. His longtime coach, Charlie Epps, said Cabrera was taking alcohol education courses for six hours a week.

In the interview, the 54-year-old Cabrera said he was trying to complete classes to graduate the sixth grade and had two months left when he was released on parole.

Epps said he asked Ping if it could supply Cabrera with a new set of golf clubs, which the coach took down to Argentina upon the release.

“I played with him for five days,” Epps said Tuesday in a telephone interview. “It’s a miracle that an uneducated, poor kid can look back and say: ‘OK, I did wrong. I’m going to learn from it and it’s all up to me now.’ He gets a second chance and he wants to try to take advantage of it.”

Cabrera played a tournament in Rosario, Argentina, last week and tied for 10th.

Augusta National did not immediately respond to a request for comment on whether he would be invited to the Masters, where champions have a lifetime exemption.

Golf Digest obtained a letter from the tour notifying Cabrera that his suspension was lifted effective Monday and that “failure to comply with the terms of your release from prison or any additional information regarding your legal situation in Argentina may result in the immediate reinstatement of your suspension.”

Cabrera has seven wins on main tours around the world, his last one at the Greenbrier Classic in 2014. He is best known for holding off Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk to win at Oakmont for his first major, and for his shot out of the trees on the 18th hole that led to a playoff win at the Masters over Kenny Perry and Chad Campbell.

Cabrera was among inmates granted two-hour visits with partners every 15 days because of good behavior. Yamila Alvarez, his partner of four years, gave birth to a son in November 2022. They married in October after Cabrera got out of prison.

Cabrera said in the Golf Digest interview that being on the golf course again “felt like a rebirth” and that his hope is to return to the Masters.

“I’ve made serious mistakes, but I’ve also paid my debts,” he said. “I’m going to work as hard as I can to clean up my image. I want to recover the stature I had as an athlete.

“Golf is everything to me,” he said. “It’s my life. I have to continue.”
