Rory McIlroy (-17) successfully defended his lead at Royal Liverpool capturing his first British Open title and third major by two strokes.

McIlroy lead the field after a strong second round and continued to build on his lead taking himself from 12-under on Friday, to 16-under on Saturday. A birdie on one to start his final round brought him to 17-under before the drama began.

Sergio Garcia (-15) got himself within two shots of the lead, but McIlroy always had an answer. Rickie Fowler played a solid round but failed to make enough birdies to catch McIlroy. He finished the day 15-under and in the top-5 for the third time in as many majors this season.

Gerry McIlroy and his three friends will collect a significant payout due to Rory's win thanks to a bet placed 10 years ago.

McIlroy captured the U.S. Open in 2011 and the PGA Championship in 2012. With the British Open added to his haul, he joins Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the youngest to win three legs of the grand slam at 25 years old.

McIlroy is the seventh man to win the British Open while leading wire-to-wire without ties.
