Scottie Scheffler

He's still a massive favorite, but Scheffler's not invincible this year. While his resume features plenty of strong finishes, he notched his only win in January at the American Express. He's coming off a performance at the Memorial Tournament where his heated discussion with caddie Ted Scott went viral. That said, he's still the World No. 1, and he can claim the career Grand Slam - on his 30th birthday - with a win at Shinnecock.

Rory McIlroy

McIlroy is open about his desire to win tournaments at cathedrals of the game, and Shinnecock certainly qualifies. The back-to-back Masters winner seems to rise to the top when the challenges get tougher, and he has six top-nine finishes in his last seven U.S. Open starts.

Jon Rahm

Rahm slammed the door on any talk that he's in poor form at majors with his T-2 showing at the PGA Championship. LIV's future is in question, but the Spaniard's place in golf's biggest events shouldn't be. Expect a big week from Rahm on Long Island.

Cameron Young

Young appeared to be one of the world's best golfers earlier in the year with wins at TPC Sawgrass and Doral. Add a top-three showing at Augusta to the mix, and he seemed like a force to be reckoned with. However, great performances come with greater expectations, and Young hasn't met them in the past three events. He's broken 70 just once in his last eight tournament rounds.

Bryson DeChambeau

With two U.S. Open titles in the last six years, DeChambeau might as well show up on the first tee rocking the stars and stripes. However, his major performance has hit a wall as of late, with three missed cuts in his last four starts. That includes the first two majors of this season, in which poor iron play and short-game struggles sent him home early. Maybe he'll contend at Shinnecock, but if the irons are still lacking, he'll head home before Saturday again.

Xander Schauffele

He's yet to actually win a U.S. Open, but nobody is more consistently great in golf's biggest test than Schauffele. He's now played in the event nine times, and a 14th-place showing is his worst finish. Whether you bet him to win or not is your call, but he's gotta be a lock for your pool with that type of consistency.

💵 Picks to win

🏌️ Bet: Rory McIlroy to win (+1100)

McIlroy's definitely figured something out at the U.S. Open with three top-five finishes in his last four starts. He seems to raise his level as the golf gets harder, and Shinnecock ranks among the toughest challenges the pros see these days. Getting a highly motivated player of his ability at more than 10-1 seems like a bargain, and it's time to take advantage.

🏌️ Bet: Matt Fitzpatrick to win (+1600)

With a second-place showing in Canada, Fitzpatrick has now finished with either a win or a runner-up showing in five of his last nine events. To save you the math: He's finished in the top two more than 50% of the time since the first week of March. He also finished 12th at the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock. There's lots to like about Fitzpatrick this week.

🏌️ Bet: Harris English to win (+9000)

English has quietly become a very strong major player since the calendar flipped to 2020. The American has two runner-up finishes in his last five majors and three top-eight showings in his last six U.S. Open starts. English's game thrives on control - and that's perfect for Shinnecock Hills.

🏌️ Bet: Cameron Smith (+12500)

Smith emerged from the major wilderness and finally showed signs of life at the PGA Championship. The Australian ended a dismal missed major cut streak at six by scrambling his face off to finish tied for seventh. The wider fairways at Shinnecock should help keep his balky driver in play, and his world-class short game should play well too.
