Last year's result

Justin Thomas used an epic weekend charge to fly up the leaderboard and claim his first Players Championship by one stroke over Lee Westwood. His incredible combined score of 12-under on Saturday and Sunday was the lowest in tournament history.

While there were many highlights from Thomas' weekend move, the stretch that stands out most was holes 10-12 on Sunday. The 28-year-old went birdie-eagle-birdie to go from three shots off the pace to holding a two-stroke lead.

There was some late drama as Thomas came close to finding the water off the tee on the 18th hole, but the Kentucky native held on for the victory.

The field

While it's not an official major, there's no better field in golf than the Players Championship. Of the 125 golfers who qualified for last season's FedEx Cup Playoffs, 122 are in the field, with Harris English and Bryson DeChambeau missing out due to injury and Kevin Na absent due to the birth of his third child.

Thomas returns to TPC Sawgrass with the chance to become the first back-to-back winner in tournament history. Jon Rahm, Viktor Hovland, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, and Rory McIlroy are among the other headliners for the event.

This year's tournament marks the first time since 1994 that both Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods won't be participating.

The course

The diabolical Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass takes center stage this week with Pete Dye's iconic design causing headaches for even the best players.

The par-72 setup plays to 7,256 yards and features one of the most memorable closing stretches in golf with the reachable par-5 16th, the legendary island green at the par-3 17th, and one of golf's toughest finishers in the par-4 18th.

With hazards strewn across the landscape, the Stadium Course rewards supreme ball-striking talent, while trouble often awaits shots that stray just a yard or two off line. It's no surprise to see names like Woods, McIlroy, and Thomas among the winners over the past decade.
