The Carolina Hurricanes have placed Alex Semin on waivers for the purpose of buying the high-priced former sniper out of his lucrative contract, the team announced.

Though the Hurricanes will shed themselves of the borderline-toxic Semin, they'll continue to be haunted by the $35-million contract they awarded him in 2013. His $2.33-million hit on the Hurricanes' cap, which will exist for the next six seasons, will be the largest in NHL buyout history, according to David Alter.

The former 40-goal scorer earned more than $1 million for every goal scored last season. He finished with six.

Carolina can officially buy him out of the contract at noon Wednesday, once he clears waivers.
