Sidney Crosby will suit up Saturday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets, but the Pittsburgh Penguins' other world-class player, Evgeni Malkin, remains notably absent from both the ice and the weight room.
Coach Mike Johnston told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Malkin isn't currently working out or skating, but he doesn't think the undisclosed injury will be a long-term issue.
Malkin's injury has been overshadowed by Crosby's pre-season bang-up, but with a week of training camp in the books, his physical inability to participate shows that it's more serious than advertised.
He missed 22 games last season with knee and foot troubles.
