Defenseman Matthew Schaefer played all five minutes of overtime in the New York Islanders' 4-3 shootout win against the Nashville Predators on Tuesday.
Schaefer drew a tripping penalty 32 seconds into the extra period, and the Islanders held possession for almost two minutes during the delayed call, leading to the frame's only stoppage with 2:43 remaining. New York head coach Pete DeBoer called a timeout before the power play began.
Schaefer logged a career-high 32:16 of ice time Tuesday. The five-minute shift is the longest by an Islanders skater since at least 2009-10, when real-time TOI data began being officially tracked.
The 19-year-old rearguard has two goals and 11 points in 12 games this season, including points in five straight contests.
Schaefer won the Calder Trophy unanimously last season as the NHL's best rookie, posting 23 goals and 59 points in all 82 games.
