The Calgary Flames and Detroit Red Wings are among the teams that have discussed signing unrestricted free-agent winger Patrik Laine, reports TSN's Pierre LeBrun.

Laine hasn't played an NHL game since October 2025. He appeared in only five contests with the Montreal Canadiens last season, mainly because of a core muscle injury.

The 28-year-old is eligible to sign a one-year contract featuring performance bonuses because he spent more than 100 days on injured reserve in 2025-26.

Laine has played in only 186 of a possible 410 games over the last five seasons. However, he's remained productive when he's been on the ice in that stretch, averaging 32 goals and 66 points per 82 games.

Once considered one of the league's premier sharpshooters, Laine has reached the 20-goal mark seven times in his 10-year career, including a career-high 44 goals as a sophomore with the Winnipeg Jets.

The Flames and Red Wings enter Tuesday tied for the NHL's worst offense.
