A major Detroit sports front-office crossover is no longer in the works.
Tigers general manager Jeff Greenberg withdrew his name from the Red Wings' GM search, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
Greenberg reportedly cited his commitment and desire to finish what he's started with the Tigers as reasons for staying in his current position. He was viewed as a legitimate contender for the Red Wings' opening, per Friedman.
Greenberg worked in the Chicago Cubs' front office from 2012-22 before joining the Chicago Blackhawks as an assistant GM for the 2022-23 campaign. He's been with the Tigers since 2023.
Steve Yzerman stepped down as Red Wings executive vice president and GM in July. Detroit hired a search firm in August to help fill the position. Chris Ilitch, the CEO of both the Red Wings and Tigers, is reportedly seeking an analytics-driven replacement for Yzerman.
Florida Panthers assistant GM Brett Peterson and San Jose Sharks assistant GM Jeff Kealty, as well as internal candidates Kris Draper, Shawn Horcoff, and Nicklas Lidstrom, are among the potential candidates for the position.
