Avalanche sign Michigan standout Hughes
The Colorado Avalanche signed University of Michigan standout forward T.J. Hughes to a one-year, entry-level contract beginning next season, the team announced Saturday.
An undrafted free agent, Hughes was one of three finalists for the Hobey Baker Award, which Detroit Red Wings prospect Max Plante won Friday.
Hughes was second in NCAA scoring this season with 57 points in 40 games. His 22 goals were tied for ninth in the nation.
Michigan lost in double overtime against Denver in the Frozen Four semifinals Thursday, ending the 24-year-old's collegiate career.
Hughes racked up 69 goals and 179 points in 156 total games over four campaigns at Michigan. He has the most career points by a Wolverine since Kevin Porter, who featured for Michigan from 2004-08.
The Hamilton, Ontario, native notched four assists in four contests at the Spengler Cup with the first-ever U.S. Collegiate Selects team.
