The St. Louis Blues signed defenseman Philip Broberg to a six-year extension with an average annual value of $8 million, the team announced Saturday.

The 24-year-old was scheduled to be a restricted free agent at the end of the campaign.

Broberg, who was chosen to represent Sweden at the 2026 Olympics, has established himself as a key piece of the present and future for the Blues. He leads the team in average time on ice this season despite being their second-youngest everyday defenseman.

The 6-foot-4 Swede has managed two goals and 12 assists in 45 games this year. He notched 29 points across 68 appearances in 2024-25, his first campaign with the Blues.

Broberg ranks in the 95th percentile of Evolving-Hockey's defensive value this season and 86th percentile in overall value.

His new contract will make him St. Louis' highest-paid defenseman and tied for third-highest-paid player overall when it kicks in next season.

St. Louis acquired Broberg in the 2024 offseason, signing him to a two-year deal with a $4.58-million cap hit as a restricted free agent while he was with the Edmonton Oilers, who opted not to match the offer sheet. The Blues sent a second-round pick to the Oilers as compensation.

The Blues cleverly signed forward Dylan Holloway to an offer sheet - also from Edmonton - the same time they signed Broberg, making it difficult for the cap-strapped Oilers to match both. Edmonton opted to match neither. Holloway is also a pending restricted free agent eligible for an extension.

The Oilers selected Broberg with the No. 8 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft. He played sparingly over three seasons in Edmonton, notching 13 points in 81 games before breaking out in the 2024 Stanley Cup Final, during which he suited up in all seven contests.
