As we move closer to the start of the 2016-17 NHL season, here's a look at the updated top 200 rankings (updated Friday, September 30)
The rankings apply to standard-scoring leagues. Skaters accumulate value via goals, assists, plus/minus, penalty minutes, power-play points, and shots on goal. Goalies track wins, goals-against average, save percentage and shutouts.
| Rank | Player | Position | Team |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Sidney Crosby | C | PIT |
| 2 | Tyler Seguin | C | DAL |
| 3 | Alex Ovechkin | LW | WAS |
| 4 | Erik Karlsson | D | OTT |
| 5 | Connor McDavid | C | EDM |
| 6 | Vladimir Tarasenko | RW | STL |
| 7 | Jamie Benn | LW | DAL |
| 8 | Patrick Kane | RW | CHI |
| 9 | John Tavares | C | NYI |
| 10 | Claude Giroux | C | PHI |
Tarasenko is moved up with the injury to teammate Jaden Schwartz. The injury isn't serious enough to affect Schwartz's own stock, but an absence of a few weeks means more shot opportunities for Tarasenko. He has an excellent chance of winning the Rocket Richard Trophy as the clear No. 1 threat in the Blues' attack.
Kane falls a bit due to concerns with Chicago's offense as a whole. Depth proved to be their downfall last season. Kane will see the full attention of the league's top defenders. Expect a slight regression in his shooting percentage as well. Beyond points, he doesn't provide much of anything.

| 47 | Sean Monahan | C | CGY |
| 48 | Jonathan Quick | G | LA |
| 49 | Roman Josi | D | NAS |
| 50 | Cory Schneider | G | NJ |
While Flames fans anxiously wait for Gaudreau's new contract, his performance at the World Cup of Hockey reassured fantasy owners of his talents. He won't have the same quality of peers in Calgary, but Monahan will continue to progress alongside him.
Marchand was also a standout at the WCOH. Barring a dip in shooting percentage (he was actually below career average last season), he should reach 40 goals for the first time. The addition of David Backes will bolster Boston's top line.

| 100 | Petr Mrazek | G | DET |
A preseason concussion for Stone creates some questions, leading to a dip the rankings. His injury also affects the likes of Hoffman and Turris, who are the other two-thirds of Ottawa's top line.
Toews suffers the same fate as Kane. An injury to any one of their regular wingers and they'll be in trouble with no viable replacement option in house.

| 148 | Adam Henrique | C | NJ |
| 149 | Jussi Jokinen | LW | FLA |

Murray and Fleury are the biggest movers here. Murray's injury will allow Fleury to see more starts to begin the season, but Murray should be given the opportunity to win back the starting job following his delayed start to the season.
Radulov is among the biggest unknowns in the league. He'll be given the opportunity to play with Pacioretty and Galchenyuk to start the year. If he sticks, he could approach 80 points in a full season. If he struggles early and gets bumped, he could struggle to reach 40 points.

| 198 | T.J. Brodie | D | CGY |

| 200 | Sam Bennett | C | CGY |
Aho is an intriguing rookie. His talents have been compared to Laine and Puljujarvi - who are much safer picks - but he has few options to play with in a bleak Carolina offense.
Hellebuyck's talent would have him much higher in the rankings, but he will be part of what could be a three-way timeshare in the Jets' crease. He's better than his counterparts, but Ondrej Pavelec's inflated contract may play a part in determining the number of starts each receives.
