The 2016-17 NHL season, and thus the fantasy hockey season, are a little under two months away. The NHL season commences Wednesday, Oct. 12, so it is time to start the start the draft season.
The rankings look at the top 200 players in standard-scoring leagues. Skaters accumulate value via goals, assists, plus/minus, penalty minutes, power-play points, and shots on goal. Goalies track wins, goals-against average, save percentage, and shutouts.
| Rank | Player | Position | Team |

| 8 | Vladimir Tarasenko | RW | STL |
| 9 | Claude Giroux | C/RW | PHI |
| 10 | John Tavares | C | NYI |
Crosby's late surge in 2015-16 would have had him take home the Art Ross Trophy, but an early-season slump was too much to overcome. Seguin was among the league leaders in the points race prior to his season-ending injury. He finished the season 14th despite playing only 72 games.
The separation between Karlsson and the second tier of fantasy defensemen helps to bolster his value. He finished T4 in last year's points race. Expect some regression from Kane following a career year. He won't convert 16 percent of his shots again.

Panarin is more likely to regress than Kane, and the value of the two is strongly correlated. Kuznetsov should continue to see his role within the Capitals' offense continue to grow in his fourth year. Subban could challenge Karlsson with a much better power play in Nashville than he ran in Montreal.

A big bounceback season should be expected from Voracek. A career 9.5 percent shooter, he scored on just 5.2 percent of his shots in 2015-16. He also tallied 200-plus SOG for a third year in a row. Rinne's poor play last season limited his value, but if he can perform like he had previously in his career, he could challenge for the league lead in wins.

Laine receives the honors as top rookie, as he is on the best team of all the top picks and should be leaned on heavily at the offensive end. Matthews may be the most talented in the rookie class, but he does not yet have enough help in Toronto. Fleury is still worthy of a late-round flier, in the event Murray struggles to follow up his postseason breakout.

The top three names in this tier all changed teams during the offseason but Staal and Boedker landed in much better situations. Backes should see an increased role, after being phased out of St. Louis by a younger generation of players. Strome should take on more responsibility in New York this season, with Nielsen and Okposo having moved on via free agency.
