LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — The previous time the Dallas Cowboys and Washington faced off with a combined record worse than this, the longtime NFC East rivals were each 0-4 and the 2001 "Gutter Bowl” got off on the wrong foot.

During pregame warmups, Dallas kicker Tim Seder collided with a horse who was on the field for some reason. The horse backed into his kicking leg, Seder missed two field-goal attempts but wound up scoring all of the Cowboys' points, including a 26-yard game-winner to make it 9-7 when time expired.

“Could’ve been ugly, but I think we survived and it ended up being OK,” Seder told The Associated Press by phone Wednesday night. “You’re just proud of your team that they keep fighting and you’re in a position to win at the end of the game, and you want to put your best foot forward, so to speak, to finish the deal.”

Dallas-Washington won't have a horse on the field — or fans in the stands — this time, but it could go a long way to determining which team wins a bad division.

The Cowboys (2-4) and now nick-nameless Washington (1-5) are in the thick of the race, even though each team has a different starting quarterback than it began the season with.

Dak Prescott's broken ankle forced Andy Dalton into action for Dallas under first-year coach Mike McCarthy. Ron Rivera saw how the NFC East was sputtering and pulled the plug on 2019 first-round pick Dwayne Haskins' development because he believed Kyle Allen gave Washington a better chance to win in his first season in D.C.

Pending the outcome of Thursday night's game between the New York Giants (1-5) and Philadelphia Eagles (1-4-1), Dallas at Washington on Sunday could be for a share of first place.

“The opportunity that we have, it’s right in front of us," McCarthy said. "You clearly understand what our division looks like, and the importance to get this win, it did not change with the quarterback situation.”

If anything, the QB situations are under the microscope given what's at stake. Dalton tossed two interceptions in a 38-10 defeat to Arizona on Monday night in his first start since replacing Prescott, and Allen had a pick, lost a fumble and threw an incomplete pass on a last-minute 2-point conversion attempt to lose to the Giants 20-19.

Yet, Washington can still say it's in the running for the NFC East title more than a third of the way through the season despite a five-game skid.

“For us to have those growing pains and still at this point be only one game out of first place is incredible,” Allen said. "We’re looking at that very hopeful and understanding the situation that we’re in.”

The Cowboys look at it like they've fumbled away their chance to build a substantial division lead. Running back Ezekiel Elliott, who lost two fumbles against the Cardinals, said he and his teammates “are going to get this thing right.”

“The beauty of it though is we’re still first place in the division,” Elliott said. “We still hold the keys to our future. Now it’s up to us to get this thing right.”

That's how Seder, now a high school football coach in the Dallas area, looked at it 19 years ago. It hasn't changed for his beloved Cowboys and what's now the Washington Football Team in the first of at least two games — and maybe more — without a real name.

“You’ve just got to find a way to win a ballgame,” he said. “Sometimes you just got to step back and say, ‘Hey, let’s do something well,’ and when you get an opportunity, take advantage of the opportunity.”

ZEKE'S FUMBLES

Elliott’s five fumbles (four lost) through six games are already within one of his single-season career worst set two years ago. The two-time rushing champion said he spent time this week watching clips of “all my fumbles ever,” including high school.

“Just kind of studying my fumbles and seeing where things went wrong and what I can do to keep that ball tighter and have better ball security,” Elliott said.

And?

“Well, if you want, you should put the tape on and go find out,” he said with a chuckle. “I don’t want to give away all my weaknesses right here.”

WHY NOT HASKINS?

Rivera has come under fire for abandoning his plan to build and develop this season, specifically benching Haskins and turning to Allen after Week 4. Three weeks and three losses after saying he believed there was a “cutoff point” for a struggling QB such as Haskins, Rivera contradicted himself Wednesday and said he'd stick with Allen “as long as I feel I can.”

“I made a decision based on what I was watching and what I was seeing, and that’s what happened,” Rivera said. “It’s about watching him and if I’m seeing what I want to see or not.”

DALLAS O-LINE IN SHAMBLES

All-Pro right guard Zack Martin is expected to be out for the Cowboys after getting a concussion early against the Cardinals. That means the Cowboys will be missing four of the five preseason starters on the offensive line. The last man standing is third-year left guard Connor Williams.

The Cowboys are also going to be on their third left tackle after Brandon Knight injured a knee against Arizona, had surgery and will miss at least a couple of weeks.

ODDS OFF

After Dallas opened as a 3 1/2-point favorite, the line is now a pick 'em after the Monday night debacle.

Friends and family will be the only people in attendance at FedEx Field despite Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan allowing teams to fill outdoor stadiums to 10% capacity, so the traditional edge for home teams is moot. Perhaps the shift underscores just how unstable the NFC East is from top to bottom.

Here's a breakdown of two significant mismatches in this weekend's NFC wild-card games.

Seahawks DT Jarran Reed vs. Cowboys LG Xavier Su'a-Filo/Connor Williams

Any team that plays Dallas in the playoffs should know how to attack the weaknesses on the Cowboys' offensive line.

Left guard Xavier Su'a-Filo struggled this season, and as a result, defensive tackles had a field day against the left side of the team's interior offensive line. If he misses Saturday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks because of an ankle injury, rookie Connor Williams could have his own issues.

Throughout the regular season, defensive tackles Vita Vea (one sack), Fletcher Cox (two sacks), Denico Autry (one sack), David Onyemata (three sacks), Da’Ron Payne (one sack), and Jonathan Allen (two sacks) were all productive against Dallas. Seahawks defensive tackle Jarran Reed also posted a dominant performance against the Cowboys, doing a lot of damage against Williams while recording two sacks in Week 3.

Reed is one of the NFL's most improved defensive tackles. Primarily a run defender over his first two seasons, the 26-year-old added some pass-rush ability to his game in 2018 to unlock his true disruptive potential.

After notching only three sacks over his first two seasons, Reed exploded for 10.5 sacks this year to go along with 50 tackles (12 for a loss), and 24 quarterback hits - all single-season career highs for the Alabama product.

This play illustrates Reed’s improved pass-rush skill:

NFL

Reed aligns as the 4i defensive tackle with a wide outside shade on Cardinals left guard Mike Iupati. At the snap, he explodes right at Iupati.

Just before he gets into striking distance, Reed cleverly jab steps outside of Iupati’s reach, causing the veteran guard to shift his weight slightly and open up to an inside move.

With Iupati leaning, Reed executes a beautifully timed swim move to cross his face and beat him. As soon as Reed clears the blocker, he forcefully plants his left foot to slow his lateral momentum, allowing him to push vertically into the pocket and bring down the quarterback.

Unfortunately for Dallas, Su'a-Filo and Williams don't fare well against that kind of pass rush. The former struggles with lateral movement because of footwork and balance problems, and the latter often lunges to compensate for his lack of power.

Here's an example of Su'a-Filo's weakness:

NFL

He's tasked with blocking Saints defensive tackle David Onyemata. When the ball is snapped, Su'a-Filo expands outside with two kick slides. However, on his third kick slide, Su'a-Filo's right foot moves backward instead of his left foot, causing him to give a soft corner.

Onyemata can then use a forceful club move, pulling Su'a-Filo down and leaving him unable to recover once the pass-rusher beats his hands. From there, Onyemata gets into the backfield and brings down Dak Prescott.

Seattle likes to move Reed around, which means Su'a-Filo or Williams won't have to handle him alone all game. Nevertheless, when he's matched up with either of those two expect Reed to take full advantage and have another productive day against the Cowboys.

Bears DT Eddie Goldman vs. Eagles LG Isaac Seumalo/Stefan Wisniewski

The Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears are strong up front on both sides of the ball, meaning there won't be many mismatches in the trenches when the two teams meet on Sunday.

That's why the Bears need Eddie Goldman to exploit the primary weakness along the Eagles’ offensive line and capitalize on Isaac Seumalo's struggles (or do the same against Stefan Wisniewski if Seumalo misses his fourth straight game due to a chest injury).

Goldman is arguably coming off his best regular season, though his stats don't do it justice, as the fourth-year defensive tackle accumulated 39 tackles (five for a loss), three quarterback hits, and three sacks.

Much of what Goldman does up front for Chicago goes unnoticed. But his teammates often bear the fruit of his labor when he frequently occupies multiple blocks, giving others free runs at the ball carrier.

However, Goldman can still be a disruptive pass-rushing force when teams consistently leave him single blocked. Here’s an example:

NFL

Goldman aligns over Vikings left guard Tom Compton. With Minnesota sliding its protection right, Goldman has a one-on-one matchup.

After coming out of his stance, he shuffles inside to manipulate Compton's movement. He gets the guard to slide inside as well, creating a giant gap between Compton and the left tackle. Goldman then executes an effective club-arm over move to take advantage of that large hole, and he blows past the lineman to bring down Kirk Cousins.

Goldman will be similarly successful against the Eagles if they don't double-team him or provide help of some kind. He's stronger than Seumalo and Wisniewski, with more deliberate hand technique than both, too.

Goldman should be able to have his way at the point of attack and be excellent against the run. Against the pass, look for him to pick his spots and apply pressure, using his violent club move to bully his way into the pocket.

The second week of the NFL season features a handful of one-sided in-game matchups that could decide the outcomes of those games. Here's a look at the four biggest mismatches of Week 2:

Philip Rivers vs. Bills' defense

Even in a loss to the Chiefs, Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers put together a masterful performance, recording 424 passing yards, three touchdowns, and an interception at home. However, his receivers dropping four passes (tied for the most team drops in Week 1) prevented him from having an even better day.

In Week 2, Rivers faces the Buffalo Bills, who are coming off a 47-3 beatdown from Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens. Unfortunately for Buffalo, Rivers is a much better quarterback than Flacco, and the Chargers have many more offensive weapons.

Rivers’ favorite target is the perennially underrated Keenan Allen, who finished with eight catches for 108 yards and a touchdown last week. Rivers prefers to target him on crossing routes in the short-to-intermediate areas of the field, where Allen’s quickness and ability to beat man coverage stand out:

From the moment the ball is snapped, Rivers knows where he's throwing. The Chiefs' defense is in Cover 1 (man coverage across the board with a safety guarding the deep middle). That means Allen, who is aligned in the slot to Rivers’ left, will face single coverage with the whole field to work with.

After the snap, Allen uses a quick stutter step to create early separation from Chiefs cornerback Steven Nelson. Then his burst takes over as he simply runs away from Nelson, giving Rivers an easy target for the completion.

When he’s not targeting Allen in the short-to-intermediate zones, Rivers loves taking deep shots to Travis Benjamin and Tyrell Williams. Against Kansas City, Rivers looked to hit both Benjamin and Williams deep, but each receiver had a bad case of the drops even after accurate passes:

Judging by their recent luck, the Bills probably won’t be as fortunate this week. Buffalo has some talent on defense, particularly from defensive backs Tre’Davious White and Jordan Poyer. But the unit struggles to stay disciplined and work cohesively.

The weakest area on the Bills' defense is its linebacker corps. Tremaine Edmunds is a young blue-chipper, but savvy quarterbacks like Rivers - who has been manipulating second-level defenders since he became a starter in 2006 - can take advantage of his inexperience.

Furthermore, the Bills' defense can’t expect to get much help from the offense, as Buffalo might be the most talent-deprived team offensively in the NFL. The Ravens had four different drives start inside Buffalo territory in Week 1, which is almost impossible to overcome on defense. After a game when the Chargers' offense left a lot of meat on the bone, expect the unit to be efficient and effective against the Bills.

On top of that, Rivers dominates teams outside of his division. From 2015 to 2017 against divisional opponents, Rivers had a 28:21 touchdown-to-interception ratio and averaged 5.82 adjusted net yards per pass attempt (the passing statistic most correlated with winning). Against non-divisional opponents over that same time span, Rivers had a 62:23 TD-to-INT ratio while averaging 7.35 adjusted net yards per pass attempt.

Look for Rivers to go off against the Bills' defense.

Khalil Mack vs. Seahawks' offensive line

After being traded from the Oakland Raiders, it didn’t take long for Khalil Mack to make an impact on the Chicago Bears' defense, finishing with three tackles, a sack, a forced fumble, and an interception in Week 1. And that was against the Packers’ David Bakhtiari and Bryan Bulaga, the best offensive tackle duo in the NFL.

Mack will have a much easier assignment this week against Seahawks offensive tackles Duane Brown and Germain Ifedi for most of the game.

Mack is one of the most difficult defenders to block regardless of the play call because he can win in so many ways. He has a unique mix of athleticism, power, and technique, making it tough for offensive linemen to find a rhythm throughout a game.

He can win with speed, using his burst, lower body pliability, and well-timed techniques to apply pressure on opposing quarterbacks:

And he can win with power, using his raw strength and leverage to physically dominate foes at the point of attack. That happened below against a top-three offensive tackle:

Against the Broncos, another team with an elite pass-rusher, Brown and Ifedi were part of an offensive line that All-Pro Von Miller roasted for three sacks on his way to winning best defensive lineman of Week 1.

Don’t be surprised if Mack puts together a similar performance when the Seahawks visit Chicago on Sunday night.

Since joining the New York Giants in 2016, Damon Harrison has been a thorn in the Dallas Cowboys’ side. Blessed with three All-Pros leading a dominant offensive line, the Cowboys never have an answer for New York’s 6-foot-3 and 355-pound nose tackle, even when Travis Frederick is healthy.

Now, as Frederick deals with the effects of Guillain-Barre syndrome, the test Harrison presents is much more difficult.

Here, the Cowboys are looking to use their bread-and-butter run play: an outside zone run.

Harrison is aligned with a slight outside shade over Frederick. After the ball is snapped, he gains superior hand positioning, using it to control Frederick while also identifying the running back’s path. As Harrison re-leverages his right hand to Frederick’s chest in an attempt to get the center off balance so that he can easily shed the block, he peaks his head into the play-side A-gap (the space between Frederick and left guard Zack Martin).

That forces Alfred Morris, who's reading the defensive line to determine which gap he should run through, to cut back to the back-side A-gap and right at Harrison, who effortlessly sheds Frederick’s block and makes the tackle.

Joe Looney, a six-year veteran and Frederick’s replacement, will likely be on the receiving end of Harrison’s powerful attack throughout the game on Sunday. However, don’t be surprised if New York lines Harrison up over rookie left guard Connor Williams when the Giants move to their nickel defense.

Neither matchup favors Dallas, as Harrison’s effective hand use and raw power will be too much for Looney and Williams. Unless Dallas becomes much more creative with its blocking schemes, Harrison is going to blow up any runs inside the tackle box.

Don’t be surprised if the Cowboys' rushing attack struggles for the second week in a row.

Julio Jones vs. Panthers' secondary

Coming off a disappointing loss to the Carson Wentz-less Philadelphia Eagles, Julio Jones and the Atlanta Falcons' offense will be looking for revenge against the Carolina Panthers, the team that Jones scorched for 12 catches and 300 yards in 2016.

It may seem weird to put the Panthers' secondary on the wrong side of a mismatches column, especially after the unit gave up just 170 passing yards in Week 1. However, the Cowboys, Carolina's Week 1 opponent, don't have a wide receiver who comes close to matching Jones’ talent, and Dak Prescott isn’t on the same level as Matt Ryan as a pure passer.

The Falcons also do an excellent job of moving Jones around the formation to manufacture big-play opportunities, making it challenging for defenses to double-team him.

Here, the Falcons are using a trips left formation with Jones lined up in the slot:

The Eagles are in a Cover 3 variant, meaning there are three deep defenders. After the snap, the two receivers aligned outside of Jones run quick-breaking routes to prevent the cornerback from dropping deep into his zone. That allows Jones to sneak behind the outside cornerback on the deep out route for a big gain.

Jones is easily capable of producing without being schemed open, too, as his elite route-running ability allows him to create a ton of separation. Here’s an example:

Jones runs another deep out route, but against man coverage this time.

After the ball is snapped, he bursts forward and eats up the cushion between him and Eagles cornerback Ronald Darby. Once Jones crosses the 40-yard line, he straightens his route to mimic a “go” route. That forces Darby to transition out of his backpedal and into a sprint.

Then Jones stealthily runs into Darby’s blind spot. Once he reaches that, he breaks off his route to create a lot of space before making the easy 22-yard grab.

Panthers cornerbacks James Bradberry and Donte Jackson will have the unenviable task of trying to slow down Jones. Neither offers much of a challenge, so don’t be surprised if Jones tears apart the Carolina secondary.

42:T405b,

The second week of the NFL season features a handful of one-sided in-game matchups that could decide the outcomes of those games. Here's a look at the four biggest mismatches of Week 2:

Philip Rivers vs. Bills' defense

Look for Rivers to go off against the Bills' defense.

Khalil Mack vs. Seahawks' offensive line

Mack will have a much easier assignment this week against Seahawks offensive tackles Duane Brown and Germain Ifedi for most of the game.

He can win with speed, using his burst, lower body pliability, and well-timed techniques to apply pressure on opposing quarterbacks:

And he can win with power, using his raw strength and leverage to physically dominate foes at the point of attack. That happened below against a top-three offensive tackle:

Don’t be surprised if Mack puts together a similar performance when the Seahawks visit Chicago on Sunday night.

Damon Harrison vs. Joe Looney/Connor Williams

The Dallas Cowboys' vaunted offensive line has three of its five starters on the shelf two weeks before the regular season.

Right tackle La'el Collins limped off the practice field on Thursday with an ankle injury, joining fellow standouts Travis Frederick and Zack Martin on the injured list.

Of the three wounded starters, only Frederick's injury is considered potentially serious. Martin worked out in pads Thursday and said there's "no doubt" he'll be ready for Week 1, according to ESPN's Todd Archer. Still, the bumps and bruises up front are beginning to accumulate for the Cowboys, raising concern as the regular season approaches.

Left tackle Tyron Smith, who dealt with knee, back, groin, and hip ailments in 2017 and finished the year on injured reserve, has been receiving a lighter workload in an effort to keep him healthy ahead of the regular season. Rookie left guard Connor Williams is the only other remaining healthy starter on a unit once hailed as the NFL's most dominant and dependable, and he's struggled in exhibition games.
