Vikings' Terence Newman credits red wine for his longevity

At 37, Minnesota Vikings cornerback Terence Newman is the oldest player on one of the NFL's youngest teams. He's also the oldest cornerback in the league.

So, what's the secret behind his longevity?

"Red wine is the key,'' Newman told Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press on Tuesday. "Get it in your veins, baby. Keeps you strong.''

Newman, who signed with the Vikings in March after three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, has started every game he's appeared in dating back to 2008. The Vikings' younger defensive backs are eager to soak up whatever advice Newman has to offer.

"He's got something special going on, so we're all trying to get his secrets,'' safety Harrison Smith said. "That was the one that he gave us was a little bit of red wine every now and then. We'll see how it goes. It's got to be red. It's good for your heart, I guess.''
