The San Francisco 49ers have traded tight end Derek Carrier to the Washington Redskins for a conditional fifth-round pick.
The pick is conditional based on how much playing time Carrier sees in Washington.
The Redskins' depth chart has been hit hard with injuries at tight end. Niles Paul was placed on injured reserve after fracturing his ankle in the preseason opener, while Logan Paulsen will also miss the season due to turf toe.
Carrier will provide depth behind starter Jordan Reed, who has a lengthy injury history of his own.
After going undrafted in 2012, Carrier found a home in San Francisco. He appeared in 11 games for the 49ers last year, hauling in nine receptions for 105 yards.
The 49ers were able to part with Carrier thanks to a deep roster of tight end talent. Vernon Davis remains the No. 1 option, with Vance McDonald serving as his backup. Further down the depth chart, Garrett Celek is a solid run blocker and rookie Blake Bell showed well in the team's first preseason game.
