Mark Davis: 'I don't know' if Raiders can stay in Oakland

The Raiders are one of several teams in the running to relocate to Los Angeles as early as next season, and their chances of finding a solution to remain in Oakland are appearing more unlikely by the day.

Following a special owners meeting held Tuesday to provide updates on the ongoing Los Angeles project, Raiders owner Mark Davis was anything but positive when asked whether a deal could be reached to keep the team in the Bay Area long term.

"I don't know. I don't know," Davis said after a special NFL meeting on Los Angeles, according to Tom Pelissero of USA Today.

While it's no guarantee that the Raiders can secure one of the two potential spots in Los Angeles that could be available as early as next year, they are the only one of three teams under consideration still yet to have their current city submit a stadium proposal.

Both St. Louis and San Diego have already made such presentations to an NFL stadium committee, ramping up efforts to keep their respective teams in town despite the intriguing option the Los Angeles market evidently provides for each.

The NFL is expected to make a decision on Los Angeles at some point toward the end of the year, with one of the three teams, or any combination of two, seemingly representing a viable option for relocation.

Davis said Tuesday that he and Chargers owner Dean Spanos are continuing to work on a shared stadium project in Carson, which was presented to the owners Tuesday by former San Francisco 49ers executive Carmen Policy.

"Just the fact that Dean and I have been working together for about six months and we've made a lot of progress and we were excited to show the membership what we've done," Davis said.

The Raiders also left Oakland for Los Angeles ahead of the 1982 season, only to return to the Bay Area in 1995.
