Geno Smith is once again in line to earn the New York Jets' starting quarterback job heading into the 2015 season, but fans of the team aren't on board just yet.
After a few misfires early in the Jets' scrimmage at MetLife Stadium on Saturday night, the third-year signal-caller heard boos from the crowd of over 10,000.
"The camera should've zoomed in on me; I had a big smile on my face," Smith said after practice, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN. "You'd think we were on the road today."
Smith has yet to live up to expectations since joining the Jets as a second-round selection in the 2013 draft, struggling with both costly turnovers and his completion percentage through two seasons.
Smith said he's learned to put up with the criticism that comes with playing under a microscope in a big-market setting like New York.
"In two years, I've developed some really thick skin. I know how to handle it now," he said.
For as much as Smith has been unable to inspire confidence in the Jets fan base to this point in his career, an improved supporting cast and an offensive system better suited to his abilities could conceivably put him in position for a breakout season.
Better decisions and ball security from Smith would complement New York's dominant defense, allowing the club to re-emerge as a playoff contender in the AFC East.
