Fantasy Footnotes: Megatron dominates, Palmer and Floyd building a connection

Every gameday during the regular season, theScore's fantasy editors recap the most important news and notes from around the league.

Calvin Johnson shines

The Giants had no answer for Calvin Johnson on Monday night.

Johnson had seven catches for 164 yards and two touchdowns, and frustrated New York all night long. Even when you know quarterback Matthew Stafford is going Johnson's way, there is still nothing defenses can do to stop him on most nights.

What could make Johnson even more dangerous this season is Golden Tate on the other side of the field, who nearly had a 100-yard game himself. If defenses have to start worrying about Tate as well, it's only going to create more space for Megatron.

The big winner in all this will be Stafford, though. He had 346 yards and two scores, while not committing a turnover. He has a chance to put up some crazy numbers this year.

Michael Floyd makes some noise

Larry Fitzgerald is well established and John Brown got all the hype in training camp in Arizona, but Michael Floyd would like you to remember what he is capable of as well.

Floyd caught five balls for 119 yards and Carson Palmer was looking his way all game. Fitzgerald ended up finishing with just one reception and although Brown had a touchdown, he was quiet for most of the night, too.

Palmer spread the ball around to 11 different receivers to the tune of 304 yards, but when he really needed a play, he was looking Floyd's way.

Notable Fantasy Lines

Golden Tate, WR, Lions
6 receptions, 93 yards
With Johnson occupying double coverages, Tate will get favorable matchups all season long.

Reggie Bush, RB, Lions
6 receptions, 49 yards, 9 carries for 15 yards
Joique Bell may have had more carries, but Bush still figures to be valuable in PPR leagues because of his role in the passing game.

Eli Manning, QB, Giants
18-of-33 for 163 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs
Manning and the Giants still look lost trying to learn a new offense. He can't be trusted as a QB1 right now.

Victor Cruz, WR, Giants
2 catches, 24 yards
Without Hakeem Nicks and an injured Odell Beckham, the Lions were able to focus in on Cruz.

Antonio Gates, TE, Chargers
6 catches, 81 yards
Rumors of Gates' demise have been greatly exaggerated. It's not the Ladarius Green show just yet.

Philip Rivers, QB, Chargers
21-of-36 for 238 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
He didn't look like the Rivers of 2013, but it wasn't an ideal matchup. It won't get any easier next week against the Seattle Seahawks.

John Brown, WR, Cardinals
2 catches, 29 yards, 1 TD
It was his first game, but Brown showed glimpses that he could be a dynamic fantasy asset as the season goes on.

Injury Ward

Andre Ellington, RB, Cardinals
Ellington played, although he didn't look 100 percent. He finished with 53 yards rushing and made five catches for 27 yards. The Cardinals played from behind for most of the second half, otherwise Ellington would probably have had a few more carries. Despite the injury it certainly still looked like he was the go-to guy.

Waiver Wire Targets

Larry Donnell, TE, Giants
Donnell had five catches for 56 yards and may have claimed the Giants full-time tight end job in the process. He also had a touchdown on a fade route from the goal line as New York targeted him twice in the red zone. Given Donnell's size and the smaller stature of the other Giant receivers, he figures to continue to be a red zone option going forward.
