When the San Francisco 49ers acquired Stevie Johnson from the Buffalo Bills in May, it was assumed that he would eventually take over the team's No. 3 wide receiver job.
But according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, Johnson is facing tough competition from Brandon Lloyd and has yet to develop chemistry with quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman was elusive during Wednesday's press conference when asked if Johnson was his "number three guy."
"We don't put numbers on them," Roman said. "We don't put numbers on them."
In a follow-up question, Roman was asked whether Johnson would be on the field when the 49ers have three receivers.
"It depends. It depends," he replied. "I think we'll have some flexibility there."
Johnson, who is under contract through 2016, is set to earn $3.925 million this season. Maiocco speculates that if Lloyd wins the No. 3 job, Johnson would have to take a pay cut to remain with the team.
