49ers cornerback Eric Wright retires

The San Francsico 49ers re-signed cornerback Eric Wright to a one-year contract in March. However, it appears the veteran defensive back changed his mind about playing the season.

Wright, a second-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in 2007, retires at just 28 years old. He was originally acquired by the 49ers in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers prior to last season, but a failed physical nixed the deal. The Bucs then released Wright and he subsequently signed with San Francisco.

Wright signed a five-year, $37.5-million contract with Tampa Bay before the 2012 season, but a number of off-field incidents limited him to just one year with the Buccaneers. He appeared in seven games for the 49ers last season, recording seven tackles and an interception.

With the departures of Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown during the offseason, Wright was expected to take on an increased role in San Francisco's defense for the coming season.

In 92 career games over seven seasons with the Browns, Detroit Lions, Buccaneers and 49ers, Wright registered 332 tackles, 15 interceptions and three forced fumbles.
