Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne suffered a significant foot injury in practice Friday, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo.
The ailment will reportedly send Payne to injured reserve, meaning he'll be shelved through the Nov. 10 trade deadline. Payne, a pending free agent, was shaping up to be one of the top trade candidates in the NFL with the Commanders stuck on one win.
Payne has spent his entire career with the Commanders, who drafted him in the first round in 2018. He made the Pro Bowl in 2022 and has remained a steady player in the middle of Washington's defensive line in the years since.
Payne posted 14 tackles, including two for loss, with one sack and one forced fumble in the first six games this season. He's also accumulated 17 quarterback pressures, which had him on pace for his most productive campaign in that department since 2022, according to PFF.
