New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart will undergo knee surgery, ruling him out for the rest of the regular season, head coach John Harbaugh announced Wednesday.
Harbaugh said Dart could return in the playoffs should the Giants make the postseason.
Dart suffered damage to his MCL, PCL, and meniscus in Monday's game against the Los Angeles Rams, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The damage to his meniscus is reportedly the biggest issue.
Dart sought multiple opinions after suffering the injury. Initial reports indicated that the second-year quarterback sprained his MCL, but further imaging revealed the extent of his knee injury.
The Ole Miss product exited during the Giants' first offensive possession. His leg bent awkwardly when Rams defenders Josaiah Stewart and Byron Young hit him during a pass attempt. Dart grabbed at his left knee after the play and was able to walk off the field to the medical tent before subsequently heading to the locker room.
Dart passed for 230 yards and three touchdowns in New York's 28-20 win against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1.
Jameis Winston, who replaced Dart in the 28-6 loss to the Rams, will step in as the Giants' starting quarterback. Winston completed 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards and an interception in relief Monday. He started two games for New York last season, and the team lost both outings.
Jake Haener will serve as the Giants' backup quarterback this week. New York could make other moves to bolster its depth at the position.
The Giants (1-1) face the Tennessee Titans (0-2) on Sunday.
