Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay said Monday that he won't know for sure how long Myles Garrett will be out until after his knee surgery is complete, according to team writer Stu Jackson.
Additionally, McVay said he hasn't decided yet whether Aaron Donald will make his highly anticipated NFL return in Week 2, according to Taylor Bisciotti of the NFL Network.
The Rams suffered a humbling 27-7 defeat in Week 1 to the San Francisco 49ers. Donald, who came out of retirement this offseason, didn't play in the contest, while Garrett was held without a single sack or tackle as he dealt with a nagging knee issue.
McVay said that he knew Garrett would have to land on the injured reserve after talking to the star edge rusher "right after the game," according to NFL reporter Andrew Siciliano. Garrett is slated to undergo arthroscopic knee surgery, though the Rams are hopeful he can return after the mandatory four-game absence required for players on IR.
Garrett, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, has been dealing with the injury since training camp. McVay admitted Monday that the team believed the issue was "something that he would be able to work through," according to ESPN's Sarah Barshop.
"Thought we would take an approach where he'd be feeling good enough to go contribute positive change and be the player that he's capable of," McVay said. "That wasn't the case. And so the next right thing for us is to be able to get this thing fixed."
Los Angeles' acquisition of Garrett in a trade with the Cleveland Browns and Donald's return have fuelled optimism that the club can get back to the Super Bowl for the first time since the 2021 campaign.
The Rams, the only winless team in the NFC West after Week 1, host the New York Giants on Monday Night Football in Week 2.
