Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid revealed that quarterback Patrick Mahomes likely won't play in the team's preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams on Aug. 15.
"I mean, there's a pretty good chance where I don't play him," Reid said, according to ESPN's Nate Taylor. "(The) percentages are leading that way. I don't know if I'll play him in the second or third game. I don't know that. The percentages probably lean against not doing that."
Mahomes has participated in all of the team's practices to begin training camp. The two-time MVP is working his way back from a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee, which he sustained in a December game versus the Los Angeles Chargers.
The signal-caller has been adamant in working toward being ready for the Chiefs' regular-season opener against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 14.
Mahomes has never missed an entire preseason over his nine-year career.
"I'm a competitor, so (on) game day, I'm going to want to be out there," Mahomes said in July of his chances to play in the preseason. "But I understand the process of getting myself ready to play in the regular season is more important. We'll see. The coaches and doctors will make that decision for me, but I'll prepare myself like I'm going to play."
Justin Fields, Chris Oladokun, and rookie Garrett Nussmeier will see more playing time during the preseason as a result of Mahomes' absence.
Mahomes and the Chiefs are looking to rebound from a disappointing campaign in which Kansas City went 6-8 with its star under center. The 30-year-old passed for 3,587 yards with 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
