The Detroit Lions and running back Jahmyr Gibbs are expected to finalize a contract extension soon, reports TheMMQB's Albert Breer.
The two sides have made significant progress on a three-year deal that will make Gibbs the NFL's highest-paid running back, sources told NFL insider Jordan Schultz. The agreement could reportedly be completed as early as Thursday.
Two other star running backs - Bijan Robinson and Jonathan Taylor - signed lucrative extensions of their own this week. The Atlanta Falcons made Robinson the league's top-paid RB with a three-year contract worth up to $75 million. The Indianapolis Colts rewarded Taylor with a two-year, $44-million pact Thursday.
Gibbs has limited his participation at training camp while negotiating a new deal.
The 24-year-old has put on a show since entering the NFL as the 12th overall pick in 2023, averaging 1,745 scrimmage yards and 17 total touchdowns per 17 games played. He's earned three Pro Bowl berths in as many seasons.
