Now that Bijan Robinson has signed a record three-year extension worth up to $75 million, all eyes turn toward the Detroit Lions and their negotiations with star running back Jahmyr Gibbs.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell said Tuesday that Robinson's new deal, which made him the highest-paid running back in NFL history, won't negatively affect Gibbs, who is currently holding in from practice as he seeks his own extension.
"(Robinson's deal is) not gonna hurt, but we'll see," Campbell said, according to ESPN's Eric Woodyard. "Look, I'm anxious to get Gibbs back out there.
"Every day that goes by, that's another day that you feel like you miss with him and getting him out there with the guys and him doing his part. But there again, it'll get done when it gets done."
When asked about his hold-in Monday, Gibbs said, "Only time will tell" when he returns to practice. Then, when a reporter questioned if the 24-year-old needed a new deal to participate, Gibbs responded, "It's not about that."
He has two years remaining on his rookie contract and is eligible for an extension.
Since being selected in the first round of the 2023 draft, Gibbs has become one of the most electric backs in the league. His 3,768 yards from scrimmage over the last two seasons only trails Derrick Henry (3,859) and Robinson (4,185) for the most in the NFL over that span.
