Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs told reporters Monday that "only time will tell" when he'll return to practice as he continues an apparent hold-in amid contract negotiations, according to ESPN's Eric Woodyard.
Gibbs and the Lions are working to secure a long-term agreement that would keep the dynamic runner with the club beyond the 2027 season. The 24-year-old has two years remaining on his rookie contract. His average annual salary of $4.4 million is far below the position's top tier, which features Saquon Barkley, Christian McCaffrey, and De'Von Achane. Each of those three earn at least $16 million annually, per Over the Cap.
Gibbs said, "It's not about that" when asked if he needed a new deal before taking part in drills with the team.
The star halfback didn't elaborate on the reasoning for his absence.
"What I'm aiming toward? Ah, I don't know," Gibbs said.
Gibbs has provided the Lions' offense with consistent production and electrifying talent since being drafted 12th overall in 2023. The Alabama product has accounted for 5,029 scrimmage yards during his career and set the NFL record for the most touchdowns in a player's first three seasons (49).
The three-time Pro Bowler was spotted observing practice for a second consecutive day Monday after completing a conditioning test last week. Head coach Dan Campbell revealed afterward that Gibbs "had a little bit of a back" issue, though it wasn't severe.
"Look, he's still part of us, and the guys - our players - love him. We love him," Campbell said Monday when asked about Gibbs' on-field absence.
Gibbs' apparent hold-in resembles the situation involving Atlanta Falcons star Bijan Robinson, who's also not taking part in drills at training camp. The All-Pro halfback is seeking a new deal of his own.
