A pair of star running backs are sitting out of practice amid long-term contract negotiations.
The Detroit Lions' Jahmyr Gibbs and Atlanta Falcons' Bijan Robinson were nonparticipants in their respective opening practices at training camp Wednesday. The talented halfbacks, who are entering the fourth year of their rookie contracts, are both eligible for an extension.
Gibbs reported to camp but didn't practice despite being healthy, signaling a hold-in.
"This will kind of continue," Lions head coach Dan Campbell said of the Gibbs situation Wednesday, according to Eric Woodyard of ESPN. "It'll come as it comes. That's the best way to say it. This is both sides working through something, and we'll take it as it comes, but that's where it is."
Gibbs has provided an electric element to the Lions' offense since being drafted 12th overall in 2023. The Alabama product posted 1,839 scrimmage yards and 18 total touchdowns in 2025, earning his third consecutive Pro Bowl nod.
Robinson, meanwhile, was spotted without a helmet or cleats during on-field drills Wednesday, according to The Athletic's Josh Kendall. Head coach Kevin Stefanski didn't address his status during a press conference before practice.
In 2025, Robinson led the NFL with 2,298 scrimmage yards to go along with 11 total touchdowns. His performance earned him All-Pro honors for the first time.
Gibbs and Robinson are expected to secure extensions that could reset the running back market. Saquon Barkley tops the position with a $20.6-million average annual salary after signing a two-year, $41.2-million extension with the Philadelphia Eagles last year, according to Over the Cap.
