New Cleveland Browns defensive end Jared Verse may be on the verge of another noticeable change ahead of next season.
The Browns acquired Verse and multiple draft picks from the Los Angeles Rams on Monday in exchange for two-time Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett.
On Wednesday, Verse took to the practice field wearing No. 8 for his first on-field drills with the Browns, according to ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi. The 25-year-old sported that number during his two seasons in Los Angeles.
However, in Cleveland, No. 8 currently belongs to quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who also wore the number to practice.
NFL rules permit duplicate numbers during offseason workout programs and training camp, where rosters swell to 90 players. As the offseason progresses, though, Verse and Gabriel will ultimately need to come to an agreement.
Meanwhile, Garrett revealed that he paid "more than a couple (of bucks)" to secure No. 95 from Rams defensive lineman Poona Ford.
Gabriel, a second-year passer, is vying for reps behind Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders as they battle for the starting role. Head coach Todd Monken said after Wednesday's practice that he believes the Browns have "two starting-level quarterbacks."
"I think both quarterbacks (Watson and Sanders) have played well enough. ... Every day, I kind of lean one way or the other," Monken added.
Gabriel could be the odd man out among the Browns' QB room next season. Rookie Taylen Green is also on the roster.
