Report: Rams progressing toward extension for MVP Stafford
The Los Angeles Rams and reigning MVP Matthew Stafford have made significant progress on an extension, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Stafford, who remains under contract through the 2026 season, announced his intention to return for his 18th NFL season in February after winning his first MVP honor.
Los Angeles has adjusted Stafford's contract in each of the past two offseasons.
Rams general manager Les Snead and head coach Sean McVay have both recently expressed optimism that Stafford will remain with the franchise.
"We've had great dialogue," McVay said in March when asked about Stafford's contact status, according to ESPN's Sarah Barshop. "I think the good thing is that communication exists. (I) feel confident about being able to work those things out."
Stafford is coming off one of the most productive seasons in his career after passing for 4,707 yards, 46 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. The three-time Pro Bowler led L.A. to a pair of playoff wins before losing to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game.
The 38-year-old was a key member of the Rams' Super Bowl LVI roster in his first season with the club following a trade from the Detroit Lions.
Stafford ranks sixth on the NFL's all-time list with 64,516 regular-season passing yards.
