Colts won't activate Richardson off IR ahead of game vs. Seahawks
The Indianapolis Colts will have to continue without Anthony Richardson, as head coach Shane Steichen announced Monday that the 23-year-old will remain on injured reserve this week, according to the Indianapolis Star's Joel A. Erickson.
"He's still working through it," Steichen said, per team reporter JJ Stankevitz. "Obviously, it's an eye; it's very delicate. So he's just resting it, and then once the doctors and trainers clear him to be activated – that's where it's at right now. Still just healing up."
The Colts are searching for options at quarterback after Steichen confirmed that starter Daniel Jones suffered a torn Achilles in Sunday's loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Richardson, who served as Jones' backup for the season's first five games, has been sidelined since undergoing surgery to repair a broken orbital bone socket in mid-October.
Drafted fourth overall in 2023, Richardson sustained an AC joint sprain that ended his debut campaign early before he started 11 games in 2024.
Rookie Riley Leonard replaced Jones on Sunday and has handled backup duties since Richardson was placed on IR. Leonard completed 18 of 29 passes for 145 yards in the contest, throwing an interception and also rushing for a touchdown. Steichen said Monday that Leonard is dealing with a knee injury but added he's hopeful the Notre Dame product will play Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.
The Colts also have signal-caller Brett Rypien on their practice squad, and rookie tight end Tyler Warren is the emergency quarterback. However, Steichen said the team is evaluating potential moves at the position. Indianapolis can open a roster spot by placing Jones on injured reserve.
