Giants to start Winston with Dart in concussion protocol
The New York Giants will start Jameis Winston at quarterback on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, interim head coach Mike Kafka announced Wednesday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
With starter Jaxson Dart still in the concussion protocol, Winston gets the nod after surpassing Russell Wilson as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart.
New York's decision marks a shift in direction under Kafka, following the club's firing of head coach Brian Daboll earlier this week.
The switch is also another demotion for Wilson, who started the season as the Giants' opening-day starter before being benched for the rookie Dart.
Winston's known for his ability to jumpstart an offense, though he carries a reputation for being prone to turnovers. The 31-year-old has thrown for 154 touchdowns to 111 interceptions across 105 career games, including 87 starts. Winston started seven contests for the Cleveland Browns last year, recording 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
The Giants also reportedly want Winston to be the backup behind Dart next season, according to Schefter and Jordan Raanan of ESPN.
Kafka also announced Wednesday that tight ends coach Tim Kelly will serve as the new offensive coordinator.
New York is off to its third straight 2-8 start.
