The Los Angeles Chargers pulled off a trade for New Orleans Saints offensive lineman Trevor Penning just before Tuesday's 4 p.m. ET deadline, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Penning switched from tackle to guard before the 2025 season, and has taken all his snaps this year at left guard. However, he has played both tackle positions in the past and will could very well go back to tackle with the Chargers.

The Chargers are desperate for help at tackle after losing both starters in Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater for the season. Alt recently suffered an ankle injury that will require season-ending surgery, while Slater sustained a torn patellar tendon in August. Prior to the move for Penning, Trey Pipkins and Austin Deculus were the other offensive tackles on the Chargers' active roster.

A first-round pick in 2022, Penning has totaled 29 starts over his career.

The Chargers are 6-3, one game behind the AFC West-leading Denver Broncos (7-2) and one game ahead of the Kansas City Chiefs (5-4).
