The Kansas City Chiefs announced Friday they placed the nonexclusive franchise tag on offensive guard Trey Smith.
Smith, 25, will remain with the Chiefs for another season on a one-year, $23.4-million contract. The two sides hope to agree to terms on a long-term deal, and negotiations are expected to continue, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
The Pro Bowl lineman will become the highest-paid player at this position, exceeding Philadelphia Eagles guard Landon Dickerson, who earns $21 million per season.
NFL clubs have until 4 p.m. ET Monday to use the franchise tag. Smith will have until July 15 to sign a long-term contract. If no deal is reached, the Tennessee product will play out the 2025 season under the one-year tender.
The 2021 sixth-round pick has been one of the more reliable staples on the Chiefs' offensive line. He's started 67 games during his four seasons with the franchise and has made 13 playoff starts.
