Jones: Upcoming season isn't Super Bowl or bust for Cowboys
Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones doesn't feel this season is a Super Bowl-or-bust campaign.
"I feel strongly that we should aspire and, frankly, do anything at any time that can make us better right now to compete at that level," Jones said, according to ESPN's Todd Archer.
"I think I'm saying a lot when I say that. This isn't about years in the future. The good news is you can make the decisions that can help you right now first and foremost but can also be additive for the future. Those are the ones I'm looking for and trying to compromise on every day."
Dallas ended the 2022 season with a 12-5 record and a second-place finish in the NFC East. The Cowboys defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild-card round of the playoffs but were bounced in the divisional round by the San Francisco 49ers for the second straight postseason.
The Cowboys have won five Super Bowl titles over the course of their illustrious history. Their last championship victory took place during the 1995 season. With "America's Team" nearing 28 years since its last title run, Jones believes that Dak Prescott is the right quarterback to lead the franchise back to the grandest stage.
"I think that we first of all have to realize how few Super Bowls that even the greatest quarterbacks attain," Jones said when asked what Prescott needs to show he's a Super Bowl-quality QB. "And it's never too late to start. And so that if Dak should start this year with a Super Bowl and tack one or two more on, then he would be right there with the best that have ever played for the Dallas Cowboys."
Among the changes made to the Cowboys' offense this offseason was head coach Mike McCarthy taking over offensive play-calling duties following the departure of offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. The team also let staples Ezekiel Elliott and Dalton Schultz become free agents and acquired Brandin Cooks over the past several months.
"There are parts of this team that we're in as good shape as we've ever been in since I've been a Dallas Cowboy," Jones said.
Dallas will kick off its 2023 campaign against the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football.
