Report: Colts targeting Eagles' Steichen to be next head coach
The Indianapolis Colts have targeted Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen to be their next head coach, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Indianapolis has informed other remaining candidates that they're moving in a different direction, Schefter reports.
The Colts and Steichen weren't allowed to agree on a deal before Super Bowl LVII and are expected to meet later this week, according to Schefter.
Steichen, who is credited with helping to develop quarterback Jalen Hurts into an MVP finalist this season, is one of the integral pieces of Philadelphia's dynamic offense. The Eagles finished the regular season ranked third in both yards per game (389.1) and (28.1) points per game.
The Colts held an extensive search to find a new coach after the team parted with Frank Reich following a 3-5-1 record after nine games last season. Former player and football analyst Jeff Saturday was named the interim coach for the remainder of the season, posting a 1-7 mark at the helm.
The Eagles are expected to promote quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson to offensive coordinator if Steichen does agree to become the Colts' next coach. The soon-to-be 36-year-old has received multiple interview requests for offensive play-calling duties across the league.
Philadelphia defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon is expected to interview for the Arizona Cardinals coaching vacancy next week.
The Eagles lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 38-35 in Super Bowl LVII on Sunday.
