Report: 49ers, Garoppolo open to 2023 return
The San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo are open to continuing their partnership in 2023, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Garoppolo has filled in admirably for starter Trey Lance, who suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2. The veteran has the 49ers atop the NFC West after recording a 6-3 record as a starter, including four straight wins. He completed just over 67% of his passes for 16 touchdowns to four interceptions.
The 49ers and Garoppolo initially planned to go their separate ways following the conclusion of the 2021 campaign. However, the quarterback underwent offseason shoulder surgery, which left the franchise unable to find a trade partner.
Garoppolo signed a restructured one-year contract that contained a no-tag clause prior to the start of the 2022 campaign.
The 31-year-old started 56 games over six seasons for the 49ers, throwing for 82 touchdowns to 42 picks. San Francisco reached the Super Bowl in 2019 and the NFC Championship Game last season with Garoppolo under center.
