Report: Panthers' Mayfield to miss multiple weeks due to high ankle sprain
Quarterback Baker Mayfield is expected to miss "at least a couple of weeks" after suffering a high ankle sprain in the Carolina Panthers' 37-15 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Mayfield is getting further tests and additional opinions to determine his exact recovery timeline, Schefter reports.
P.J. Walker is expected to start Carolina's Week 6 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
Mayfield appeared to sustain the injury late in the first half after a 49ers player landed on his leg. He limped to the locker room prior to halftime but returned to play most of the second half. Mayfield completed 20 of 36 passes for 215 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception in the game.
The 27-year-old passer wore a walking boot during his postgame availability.
The 2018 first overall pick is currently amid his debut campaign with the Panthers after being traded by the Cleveland Browns in July. Mayfield has struggled through five games, throwing four touchdowns and four interceptions along with 962 yards while leading Carolina to a 1-4 record.
Meanwhile, Carolina fired head coach Matt Rhule on Monday and named Steve Wilks as the interim coach for the remainder of the season.
