The Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns continue to discuss a potential trade for quarterback Baker Mayfield as both teams begin mandatory minicamp, sources told Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports.

The Panthers feel an "urgency" to complete the deal soon to give Mayfield time at minicamp, but how much of his $18.8-million salary they'll pay remains a major issue, Jones added.

The Browns excused Mayfield from minicamp in an apparent mutual agreement. The AFC North club reportedly is intent on not releasing the signal-caller despite trading for Deshaun Watson.

The Panthers began their pursuit of the 2018 first overall selection earlier in the offseason but reportedly decided to hold off on making a move prior to April's draft.

Carolina passed on using the sixth overall pick on a quarterback, instead opting to take Matt Corral in the third round. Veteran Sam Darnold remains in line to start after a poor first season with the Panthers in 2021.
