Defensive end Josh Sweat was admitted to the hospital Tuesday night and underwent an emergency procedure to address a life-threatening issue, the Philadelphia Eagles announced Sunday.

As a result, Sweat was unable to play in the team's wild-card loss Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"Josh and our medical team did everything possible to help him return to play," the Eagles said. "He improved every day, but it was determined by the doctors today that he was not quite ready."

Philadelphia listed Sweat as questionable Friday. The team said his procedure wasn't for a ruptured appendix, per Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Sweat, 24, racked up 45 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and 7.5 sacks during the regular season.

The budding pass-rusher signed a three-year, $40-million contract extension last September.
