Washington's Young: Heinicke could 'start on any other team'
Washington Football Team quarterback Taylor Heinicke received a major endorsement ahead of his first regular-season start since 2018.
"I think (Heinicke) can start on any other team in the league," defensive end Chase Young said Tuesday, according to The Athletic's Rhiannon Walker.
Heinicke is replacing Ryan Fitzpatrick, who's expected to be sidelined for six-to-eight weeks after he suffered a hip injury during Sunday's game. The 28-year-old passer completed 11 of his 15 passes for 122 yards and one touchdown in relief against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Heinicke, who'll be backed up by Kyle Allen, broke out during last year's NFL wild-card round against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He threw for 306 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
"I think our guys will rally around him," coach Ron Rivera said Monday during his press conference, according to team reporter Zach Selby.
Rivera added: "He understands what he has to do and how he has to do it. I'm excited to see what's going to happen."
Heinicke, for his part, says he feels more empowered after Washington chose not to acquire a better quarterback, per Walker. The signal-caller says that reflects the franchise's confidence in him.
Heinicke and Washington will next take on the New York Giants on Thursday Night Football.
