Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith is week-to-week due to a knee sprain, the team announced Monday, per NBC Sports Philadelphia's Dave Zangaro.

The rookie went down in practice Saturday, leaving with what was initially reported as a minor leg injury.

Smith is in contention to open the season No. 1 on the Eagles' wideout depth chart, though his injury could cast doubt over his availability for the opener.

The Eagles drafted Smith, who won the Heisman Trophy at Alabama last year, with the 10th overall pick. The lanky receiver posted 1,856 yards and 23 touchdowns as a senior for the Crimson Tide.

Philadelphia is slated to open the preseason Aug. 12 against the Pittsburgh Steelers and begin the regular season Sept. 12 versus the Atlanta Falcons. The Eagles are looking to improve upon their 4-11-1 record from a year ago when they struggled mightily to get production out of their wide receivers.
