Broncos to start Rypien vs. Jets on TNF
The Denver Broncos will roll with Brett Rypien over Jeff Driskel as their starting quarterback for Thursday's game against the New York Jets, head coach Vic Fangio announced Tuesday, according to NFL Network's James Palmer.
Driskel started Sunday's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but was benched in favor of Rypien for the final drive after struggling to get Denver's offense moving for the majority of the game.
Rypien went 8 of 9 for 53 yards and an interception on that possession. Meanwhile, Driskel finished 17 of 30 for 176 yards and one touchdown against one interception. He was also sacked five times.
Broncos head coach Vic Fangio suggested Monday that both Rypien and Driskel could see the field against New York.
"Yeah, that's always available," Fangio said of both players taking snaps, according to Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site. "Pulling quarterbacks in and out unless you have a good reason to isn't something you want to do a whole lot of. But yes, in this situation, it could be a mix of the guys."
Fangio added it was "unrealistic" to expect former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles to play Thursday after joining the team last week.
The Broncos and Jets, who've been among the teams hardest hit by injuries to start the season, are both looking for their first win of the year Thursday.
Drew Lock, who was hurt in Week 2, is reportedly expected to miss two-to-six weeks with a sprained AC joint.
